It was ruled "accidental".
Most legitimate doctors here won't prescribe these strong pain killers any more for chronic pain. They will allow a few doses after surgery or injury but it's too easy to get dependent on them or overdose by using them along with tylenol, etc.. There have been a lot of ODs on them here and all over the country. The doctor who wrote him the script should be investigated.

I'll add the link to another article which may be a little clearer. www.msnbc.com/msnbc/prince-died-accidental-overdose-painkillers-medical-examiners-officeI had a friend whose daughter died of an overdose of this drug or one of its counterparts, several years ago. She was dealing with pain from a torn shoulder muscle and tripled the dose to give her enough relief to get some sleep. Then, never woke up. They are very dangerous. She was a small person, similar in size to Prince. My friend always believed the doctor should have taken that into account and prescribed a smaller dosage or something else less lethal.

Thanks Dex and Jessie. Such a terrible, terrible shame. Dreadful loss! Painkiller OD is a notable cause of death in this state. The doctors here have been made so aware it's almost impossible to get a script for pain pills unless one is admitted to a hospital and has them administered there. Horror story for chronic pain sufferers, but the risk is too great.
