No, actually a very good idea. I think there's something similar here but maybe not everywhere ... administered by the states. It's been a long time since I've had accurate information about that and would have to research it a little. It may have something to do with a work-study program that allows for on the job training and apprenticeships. Not only keeps those on benefits busy but gives them a leg up when applying for paying jobs.
Do you think that set-up works well in the U. K.? In Kentucky, we have a mixed bag ... no job shortages in my part of the state (northern) but few jobs to try for in more rural areas.

I agree with you, it's always a good idea for the unemployed to be given opportunities. Unfortunately some people aren't suitable for the positions they are sent to and may end up with benefit sanctions. We have food banks here in the UK, it's very sad that they are needed in this day and age.

irelevent to the thread..if you wish to discuss this make a new thread...this thread is about slavery and enslavement not welfare/politics or society and certainly not about starving to death or taxation Hi Mouse, slavery brings with it circumstances, which is what Kronks is talking about, so what he has to say is quite in order as far as I am cocerned. and I disagree...but what ever slavery does nothing to bring about the conditions Kronks has indicated slaves do not get to choose the work they do or the hours they work or even the ability to do nothing and get paid for it

Sounds interesting. How do they manage that .. do people have to go in and get vouchers to submit for their benefit checks or is it done for them? Here, I think there's something that proves they have actually looked for a job .. not sure whether that's for welfare or unemployment. The unemployed receive unemployment benefit and related benefits such as housing benefit and so on. The unemployed sign on fortnightly and have to prove they have been job seeking to qualify for social security payments.. The workfare scheme gives unemployed people a chance to gain work experience. Some charities and supermarket chains take welfare claimants and have been accused of exploiting the scheme for free labour. and this isn't slavery either...very far from it she wont even pay council tax or repairs and renewls ...why should the tax payers be burdened by her and the thousands and thousands ad nauseaum like her.... there are genuine cases...there are also con-merchants and shysters..its time it was really sorted out..no work on yoyur own head be it...I wouldn't mind but ..they complain that enough isn't enough just like this girl join the real world sweetie no one owes you a new sofa or fridg..and in debt too now theres a suprise Becky, 21, from Essex has never had a job She has been on benefits since becoming pregnant aged 16 Said not working allows her to spend quality time with Frankie, four Single mother said she wants more money to buy new couch and fridge Spent £500 on her little girl at Christmas A single mother who has never had a job after getting pregnant at the age of 16 says there are perks to be being a young parent on the dole. Becky, 21, who gets £13,500 a year in benefits and lives in a new build two room apartment in Essex, says her lack of employment means she can spend more time with her daughter Frankie, four. 'The best thing about the benefits system for me is spending Read more: www.dailymail.co.uk/femail/article-3825170/Working-parents-don-t-bond-Single-mother-says-benefits-allows-spend-quality-time-daughter-buy-FIFTY-TWO-presents-Christmas.html#ixzz4MKKev92E Follow us: @mailonline on Twitter | DailyMail on Facebook

We still have slavery in the west under the warm word of workfare, ie work for basic subsistence or starve to death, shocking it seem the majority of the electorate agree with it. So still in the dark ages in the 21st century. hardly shocking that """the electorate shocking it seem the majority of the electorate agree with it."" the majority are sick of keeping scrotes layabout and com merchants ..there are enough cases nop one can be ignorant of what is going on you may or may not be aware of the work going on to put an end to none contracted hours and payday loans as for work fare..they are hardly working for nothing.....they are STILL in receipt of welfare/unemployment/housing subsidies etc its not a scheme I particularily like ..but the aim is to get them in the routine of getting up to go to work...to try alter the mindset of relying on benefits if they don't like work fare the answer is theirs..go get a job the biggest hinderence to many looking and finding a job is the level of welfare and subsidies which means they are better off not working than they are working [there are parts of the country where finding work is almost an impossibility.. and there are circumstance where being taken on by an emplyors just isn't going to happen..these two circumstance are special circumstance] but for the lazy bone idle no work no eat

In most of the world it's work for basic subsistence or starve unless there's a relative, friend or charity/church that will help. That not slavery, Kronks, that's life. In the western world at least those people not able to work because of disability are helped. I don't know about your country but in the U.S., that's bare bones. At least it's enough to get by. No slavery here that I'm aware of.

Since when did slaves get paid vacations, holidays, health insurance and a 401k plus a forty hour workweek with two days off?

That kind of job is not rigid standard for everybody. Then there are the Amazon wage slaves. Still, Kronks is off base in trying to say that people who are employed to keep their gov. assistance are slaves. They're lucky to live where help is there for them.

Hi Tenpin, It is still a mere pittance compared to what they would be earning if they had a proper job. Some company owners deliberately underpay migrants by having them work long hours under dreadful circumstances because of the workers ignorance of how they should be treated.
We had this happening out here. Asians who had migrated to this country and didn't know any better were treated like slaves. There are all sorts of behaviour going on leading to workers being disadvantaged. In these circumstances it could legitimately be called slavery.IMO

They should be given a regular wage so that they can live normally.

But "why", if it's no fault of their own, don't they go out and find normal jobs? You realize working tax-payers, who may not particularly like their jobs ... some of them "demeaning" .. are providing that pittance, don't you?
I am assuming, if a disability is to blame, they are getting full disability assistance .. not in the workfare program.

I worked with a filipino lady and she told me how it is there....if you don't have relatives who can send food money or clothing, there is no help like we have. Leah and other relatives here would send clothing and other packages back home to poor relatives.....I can't imagine no food banks, welfare system or any of govt. assisted programs we have in America.

A little different turn but it's still on topic. No problem. Workfare in the UK is not slavery, it's unpaid work for people who receive benefits. Some companies do exploit it but why shouldn't the unemployed work for their benefits? Slavery anywhere is unpaid work for people who receive basic benefits ie enough food and shelter to keep them alive so they can put another had shift in. Why shouldn't the unemployed work for benefits? Well to stop companies sacking all their workers and rehiring them as slaves. Further to that is totally inhumane and immoral. Al companies who use it are exploiting it, if they have a job they should pay a wage, what is to stop them progressively sacking their workers and rehiring them as slaves? Nothing! It is disgusting and should be illegal. Which jobs do you think are best performed by slaves by the way? I have a few jobs that need doing, where do I get one of these slaves from? I reckon I could put quite a few companies out of business using this slave labour.
