got phone call from granddaughter and DIL the other day.. both talking at once ..granddaughter wittering on about jeans..turns out she meant genes seems she @12 going on 20 had found a grey hair and this had caused great angst and life as we know it was about to end and wasn't worth living any way..how old was I and how old was her aunt etc when we first got grey hairs... how can one grey hair cause so much panic...any way I calmed her/them down pointing out that although her aunt had gone grey during her 40s..grandaughters father hasn't a grey hair to be seen anywhere at 50 his hair is as black as ever it was and I didn't go grey until my late 50s and that as her hair is not as dark as ours she has yrs to go before grey hairs take over I doubt I would have even noticed a grey hair at 12 narly 13 yrs old or given it a second thought even had I found one...how times change..i think they grow up far too soon these days..
and the weather is mild and damp..still dark out side so no idea of how the day will be

Mouse, early gray hair runs on my dad's side of the family. I have some gray hair in my 30s and more to come. The women care a lot more abot that than the men do.
I worked overtime Monday and Tuesday because we knew this arctic cold was coming and what we're doing right now needs bearable weather. So, just a few hours in the office today and tomorrow.
Have a good'un.

Hmph. So much for being home tomorrow. Just past Cuxhaven, outward bound from the Elbe, & suddenly there's a big 'BANG' and the main engine stops. Couldn't get her restarted, but fortunately we were able to anchor in a safe place without assistance. After checking all the obvious stuff, it's time to apply Occam's Razor. Looking elsewhere, I decided to check inside the crankcase. To my horror, I saw the two halves of the lower gearwheel that drives the camshaft from the crankshaft lying in the bottom of the crankcase... There followed a VERY interesting phone call to the office. Upshot was that the engine builders don't want me to do anything, as it's a Warranty claim. A decision now has to be made as to where we will go for repairs. Oh, deep joy... At least we're all safe & the ship is safe smiley 1 I hope everything is going well for you and with the ship, Mark.

Well, it's bitterly cold here, into the misus range F, tonight. Glad to be inside and warm. Feel for those who have to be out. Fret's in a band meeting this evening. I'll be here for a little while, then off to a nice lasagna, green salad, garlic bread supper.

Well, just said cheerio to two makers' men who have done an inspection of the damage as best they can without further dismantling. The prognosis is not good. I think we'll be needing a new crankshaft, so that's likely to be 6 weeks out of service. I understand that our crewing department are looking at arranging a tug to come out with the new C/E & C/Off, & for us to go ashore on that tug. That's fine, but there's 50 to 60 knot winds forecast for German Bight for the next 5 days, so whether the boat transfer is possible remains to be seen. No decision yet on where we're to go for repairs, but in the meantime we will have to gas free the ship too.

a peaceful..prosperous and happy new year to every one its unseasonably mild this morning though theres quite a strong wind daughter was working last night and Grandson decided to stay in as did his friends[wonders will never ceace and whats more he actually did some studying however..the only drink in the house was a bottle of Baillys..so he brought up two glasses and we sat and chatted and had a dram or two to welcome in the new year[even though it was a couple of hours to go till midnight ..I decided to turn in around 9-30 so our first footing will be this morning when the boy gets up...as he is both tall..male and dark he fits the bill....I shall give him a coin for wealth..a piece of coal for luck and he will go out the backdoor and come in through the front door You are a person after my own heart as I originally hail from Aberdeen Scotland. We used to start our first footing at 12 midnight and go on through till around 7am. Always had a great time ending up a little bit tipsy by 7am. I don't drink anymore, but I certainly loved Baieys. You really brought back memories. Thanks for that.

I think it got up to 12 F and nobody got sent out into the field, on the ground or in a plane, same for tomorrow. Then by Monday we should be back to normal. Get ready for the weekend.
