Months before the outbreak of World War II, Heinrich Himmler--prime architect of the Holocaust--designed a special concentration camp for women, located fifty miles north of Berlin. Only a small number of the prisoners were Jewish. Ravensbrück was primarily a place for the Nazis to hold other inferior beings: Jehovah's Witnesses, Resistance fighters, lesbians, prostitutes, and aristocrats--even the sister of New York's Mayor LaGuardia. Over six years the prisoners endured forced labor, torture, starvation, and random execution. In the final months of the war, Ravensbrück became an extermination camp. Estimates of the final death toll have ranged from 30,000 to 90,000.
For decades the story of Ravensbrück was hidden behind the Iron Curtain. Now, using testimony unearthed since the end of the Cold War and interviews with survivors who have never talked before, Sarah Helm takes us into the heart of the camp. The result is a landmark achievement that weaves together many accounts, following figures on both sides of the prisoner/guard divide. One of the darkest chapters in human history. I remember reading about Ravensbrück as a child and finding it unbelievable that a supposedly civilised country could have behaved in that way.
It was also used to carry out many medical experiments on the unfortunate women inmates.
I read the autobiography of one of the camp survivors - Lydia Lipski - who was injected with a virus that was not supposed to kill her till twenty-five years later.
A dark blot on the history of Europe - an appalling human tragedy.

I am amazed at how young the nazi female guards were and the depravity of their hearts...how they became so evil at such an early age astounds me....I believe all are born with a depraved nature, no execptions except Jesus, but there usually are restraints on most of us.
I'm glad justice was meted to them..they received more mercy in death than they showed others in life.
I was doing some research on some of the female nazi guards and came across Maria Mandel who was held responsible for one half million deaths....I cannot fathom the evilness in her nor what the judgement of God will be upon her.

Sounds like a really depressing read. I don't get depressed as I love history and true stories of people that lived through almost impossible times. |

I broke down and purchased the kindle book as I dislike trying to hold a 600+ page book and getting the light for reading right.
I am sold on e-books for the ease and convenience plus I don't have to handle a book someone else has.

Things like that creep me out. I like biographies and even good true crime, but not when it's graphic and gore.

I enjoy reading all kinds of books, but I do have a preference for a well crafted fiction character.

Sounds like a really depressing read. actually it shouldn't be a depressing read.. it should make us aware of how thin the veneer of civilisation is... I was at college she was a year above me.... with a survivor of Ravensbrook.. beautiful woman... stunning... I wondered why she always wore slacks.. as women didn't wear slacks so much back then my friend Freddy her self a refugee from Bulgaria.. told her older sister what I had said.. her sister then told her that she had been operated on in Ravensbrook...her legs and all without anesthetics.. later I saw her legs... the sick barbarism of what was done to her..is beyond words.. its some thing that you can only feel |

If we go to school, we know about these horrific events. I don't need to read all the vivid descriptions. To me, that's sinking into the depths of the despair of others. Brain pain. Enough bad things hit us in the face with the daily news without going there for enjoyment. I guess it's a matter of taste. I don't like depressing movies either. Didn't even like Titanic. |

I didn't watch titanic either... now that to me is dwelling on human misery by making all fluffy and love story .. in order to make money and branding it entertainment but as you say its each to their own I understand about the vivid descriptions but how do we know enough to want to stop it ever happening again if we don't understand what went on how can we understand what makes peoples in to monsters if don't know and feel what monsters do I know its upsetting.. yet at the same time theres glimpses and stories of the other better side of human nature too |

It is quite graphic and I had no idea of this torture until you mentioned her. barbarism isn't it..incomprehensible how any one could do these things ...but they do.. and pass them selves off as human beings I think this is where I get angry when people think not having a soft bed in prison is torture etc etc |
