Anna, there's all the difference in the world between making people aware of the appalling cruelty that the Nazis (and others) meted out and some kind of gratification.
To be moved and resolved never to allow such things to happen again (at least in your own country and as far as you have the power to do so) is what matters.
It's not some sick sexual turn-on to read about these dark sides of human behaviour.
And as the saying goes, those who refuse to learn from history are compelled to repeat it.

These are the sort of things we read in World Civ, or just to learn. I cannot imagine reading them for enjoyment.

I'm limited on reading options so history is perfect for me....I paid so little attention to history in school that I now find certain events of interest to me so it's more learning than entertainment.

Nobody with more than 5 brain cells would enjoy 50 Shades of Gray. One of the most poorly written books ever to hit the market, and the author made a fortune. Hard to believe but true. Not erotica, just cheap porn. Not a good comparison.

not reading for enjoyment but for information...for understanding and for a lesson of life
but how do we know enough to want to stop it ever happening again if we don't understand what went on how can we understand what makes peoples in to monsters if don't know and feel what monsters do I know its upsetting.. yet at the same time theres glimpses and stories of the other better side of human nature too
we all know there are those who deny the the camps ever existed.. others deny the numbers killed other say the camps excisted but that what we know went on in the camps never happened at all and some where in the mix of denials and reinventions of history is the truth.. and we have to support the truth.. and to do that there has to be knowledge of what happened
I believe it is spoken about in schools.. but it will be glossed over on the grounds that students/pupils would find it too upsetting at 12-16 or what ever age....to be given the unvarnished accounts ....[which is what we do constantly with our young]..

Terrible, poorly written book. I wouldn't know about the movie's ticket sales, but the critical reviews were pretty awful .. at least the ones I read were bad. Go ahead and read it or watch it if you want to. Just don't say you weren't warned.

We studied it in school, but in the senior year of high school and college if I remember correctly. Why would you want younger kids to study World Civ? It stays with one longer if it's taught when the attention span is a little better developed. I do remember The Diary of Anne Frank being required reading in middle school. It's just a matter of taste, I think. As an adult, I've been a life long reader .. from non-fiction and biographies to all kinds of well written fiction. NOT a waste of time.

I haven't indicated I want younger children to be taught .. I don't know at what age they are taught so put an age range 12-16 personally I would make it compulsory for all 15-16 yr olds.. nothing gratuitous but leaving nothing out..
what is world civ.....is it world history ?

I haven't watched a movie or tv show in over a year....only things I can find for viewing are documentaries on youtube

I like comedy and sci-fi so can usually find something, even if it's an old Doctor Who. I use YT for the Poirot mysteries, music and an occasional old movie. Also, good documentaries that aren't too long. To each his/her own.

World Civilization. It usually comes in 2 or 3 parts .. a lot of ground to cover. Not compulsory in all public schools. Curricula is usually decided by the states. States with very conservative boards of edu tend to be protective. Personally, I enjoyed World Civ very much. Wouldn't mind sitting through some of those courses again.
