How many of us have phobias? I know that I do! What is it that causes them? In the case of my own main phobia - a fear of water and sailing on ships - I can place the origin. As a child I nearly drowned (twice) and it left me with a lasting fear of water. Whenever I go on any kind of vessel across water I am in a state of terror, firmly convinced that the boat or ship will sink. Yes, of course I am aware that it is irrational but I cannot help myself. Do other members have phobias? Please share them with us and give your own thoughts as to why you have them! Thank you.

I think a phobia needs more than just to be afraid. It has to have a certain horror and disgust about it, like finding half a slug in your salad. I feel that way about cobwebs and squishy things. I don't like sudden spiders either but I don't mind so much if I know it's there.

I was quite happy to pick up spiders and put them outside until I was told they can bite! Now I won't pick them up but I don't have a phobia. Do they bite?

I don't think you should go to Australia. Yes they do and some of them can kill you. Most of those live in Australia and they're not necessarily great crabs of things either. I got bitten by a ladybird once. I thought that was unfair- they look such sweet things.

We have 2 varieties of poisonous spiders here - black widow and brown recluse. It's easy to recognize either and others may, at worst, cause a little swelling and itchiness. My worst phobia (though I don't think it's necessarily irrational) is height ... wait ... let me correct that ... it's a fear of falling from high places. Next is less severe - fear of being in enclosed spaces ... makes me very unhappy in elevators or windowless rooms.

I guess a lot of people would disagree on how rational or irrational a phobia is.
For example, planes DO crash; ships DO sink; spiders DO bite; and so on.
I've got so many phobias I'll have to think about it.
My main ones are of fire and being trapped in enclosed spaces.
Both I suppose are partly rational but not to the extent I feel them,

why on earth did you make a spider catcher ...novel and inventory.... but why ?? an envelope or a paper bag does just as well In all the other methods there is a risk of the spider losing one or more of its legs. I would feel its pain, as my own. I needed a method that was the gentlest and ensure that any risk to the spider was minimised. The method I devised gives me both a visual and a physical guarantee. I wouldn't like a Surgeon to operate on me without a suitable anaesthetic. Nor can I handle the spider, who is my friend and equal, without the same care and sympathy. Regards. Prashna

as i like spiders..i am very carefull when getting out of danger a spider lives in a corner in my bedroom...been in the same spot for years and it has babys every year too loads of them,,amazing to watch then grow and lest you should think we never decorate..i always wait till the babies have hatched and departed and mother spider has wandered off..then we decorate and then she comes back and the process begins all over again... a friend has a large spider called oscar who lives in her down stairs loo....it comes out and looks at any one who goes in and then retreats into its hole[the hole is deliberately left for oscar
