Settle to Carlyle and back

we had quite a drive to settle in Yorkshire to start our journey7..rotton weather passing isolated farms and villages..and some very pretty and quite old buildings on the way...and the first colours of autum were just beginning

finally we arrived at Settle station to await the train to Carlyle...an old fashiomned station still as it was originally built..the concession to modernity was the disabled toilets
it still had its porters room[even though porters are extinct]..heres one of us pretending to check the time table along with ""if my bum looks big don't dare take a photo"""it didn't and I did
we had to cross via the bridge onto the other side to get the north bound train[back in the day they really did build for keeps] and waited in the small waiting room for our train to arrive

once on the train we settled to take in the scenery[weather permitting as the heavens opened then cleared then opened yety again
even the birds looked dejected

by this time we were thinking find the nearest hostelry and imbibe to pass the time until we could get a train back...but all was not lost as we arrived and the rain stopped

we decided to make our way to the cathederal[we knew there was a restaurant there]...so walked past the town square where the market was on and a few interesting buildings and streets from any century you care to mention..

the cathederal is built of red/pink sandstone...and has a great pair of gates at its enterance and a huge tree really beautiful...all the buildings are associated with the cathederals..homes for various clergy,,choir school etc and of varying ages..medieval..tudor..Georgian..Victorian etc

yes I rather liked that one..haven't time now but will put some on of the cathederal tomorrow

gargoyle....and an 11th century enterence and stairs/steps...and a very dark view of the inside of the cathederal choir stalls

the east window..sorry about the quality but was trying to capture the colours on the ceiling of the lady chapel without falling over

paintde wood panels[which used to be the norm in English churches...most were destroyed or painted over during the commonwealth puritan period[Cromwell]of course its paintings such as these and illustrated bibles etc which give an insight into dress and ways of life in past centuries

the BISHOPS SEPTRE....appear to have mislaid the high roof space above the knave...retracing our steps from the cathederal and food I took time out to do a little shopping and managed to find one or two things ""I couldn't live without"" ....so back on the train for the journey home
love the Victorian windows and so glad they haven't beeb swept away in a rush to modernise...and a very beautiful candle heavily decorated

Yorkshire a small river swollen and over flowing its banks due to the rain..and the day drawing to a close...we got off the train collected our cars and then drove back home..some what tired but having had a good day.....and trying to think where next to go
