We had a walk on Scarborough beach, was windy, cold but very sunny. Businesses are getting ready for the Tourists who will be arriving when the season starts. Visibility was very good, I could see Block Island and I could see they had installed a load of wind turbines in the sea to the east of Block Island. I had a friend who used to go out in a boat to Inspect the coatings on the offshore structures, he even got full pay every time they could not go out when the swell was over 3 foot ! Toby, I envy you your beach walks. My sister lives in Virginia Beach, and I go spend time there with her at least a couple of times a year. Very relaxing.

""Scarborough... odd that place name should come up..one of my closest friends is off to Scarborough "" Same name but this Scarborough beach is on the new England coastline. The early settlers of the USA were of course from England and they named places with names from England. I know the original Scarborough very well, just down the coast from Whitby, all that area was developed by Vikings who had a deal with the Saxons that the Vikings stay north of the Humber, hence the original name,''Northumberland'', and the Saxons stayed south of the Humber. One interesting fact that I am sure nobody will know is that the reel used for fishing was invented a long time ago at Scarborough, it is the simple spool with a winding knob, attached to the rod by a bar so can be turned, still called a Scarborough Reel

The north east coast has some of the best sands in all the world, when the tides are right you can go and gather seacoal to heat your home for free ! there are great swathes of coal seams out under the sea which get eroded by the water and wash up onto the sands. I did a lot of seacoal gathering when I was a Lad, let the seacoal dry out and remove all the mussel shells otherwise they pop and pack the seacoal into cones made from newspaper. I remember looking at fossilized ammonites on Redcar beach, they were so common too. Whitby is a good place to gather Jet which used to be very popular during Victorian times and if you go to the beach below the cliffs where the old graveyard is then after storms there are generally exposed coffins sticking out of the cliff and sometimes jewellery and bones at the cliff base. The sea and wind is eroding the coastline all the time.

@beth.""My sister lives in Virginia Beach"" I reckon that's a lovely area, I wanted to settle in either North or South Carolina because Houses there are cheap, taxes are low and a good climate but wife wanted to be near Daughter so quite by chance we ended up here in Narragansett (amongst Demcrats)

Va. Beach is a nice vacation site but surrounded by Richmond (lg city) as well as Norfolk and the navel base. The best area south of you is the Outer Banks in the Carolinas and the off shore islands of Georgia. Expensive but easy living. R.I. is nice with the benefit of the shore and nice people. Politics probably does not make a lot of difference, but it's been my experience Democrats are a little better educated over-all, therefore, perhaps, more hospitable and easy going. As the old saying goes, to make friends, you only need to show yourself friendly. I would not suggest MAGA hats and Trump attitudes, but otherwise, there should be some who will enjoy your company.

Nice spring day here. Worked in the yard this a.m.. Some of the bulbs we planted last fall are coming up.
I see by the weather channel that there are a lot of bad floods in the mid west area where Menantol lives.
Best of luck and hope they're not too close to you, Men.

The pies were very good and later this week we'll try Derby Pie to see whether I still remember how to make it. The first weekend in May will be here before we know it!

back to all over grey.. very dull and dreary after yesterdays wonderful warm sunshine my friend with the C came so we sat and chatted about life and as usual we ended up having a good giggle …….she is being awfully stoic about every thing ...and having got all her affairs in good order is looking forward to Yorkshires bracing weather before life gets too taxing
