Warm weather is back and we've had visitors... Stag beetles (Dorcus curvidens) are very rare and yesterday I caught the cat playing with a male (with the large mandibles) and rescued it. They spend most of their life underground as larvae, only emerging for a few weeks to find a mate and reproduce. Also in the garden, but in no danger... False widows first showed up here in the garden shed a couple of years ago and it looks like they're here to stay. HiFretslider, we have poisonous redback spiders here in Australia and the false widows also. I'm not sure about the stag beetles, but we probably have them too.

Get well, soon, Scottish Lassie. mouse, there is a book, A World Lit Only By Fire by William Manchester that I enjoyed reading enormously. It should not be used as a study guide as he has used mostly second hand sources and is intended to be a "humanized" version to capture interest and appeal to the casual reader. But, it is a good starter book to read for pleasure and if you require dry history - go from there to more scholarly texts. Here is the Amazon paperback at a good price or it should be available in libraries. www.amazon.com/World-Lit-Only-Fire-Publisher/dp/B004S3L14Y/ref=pd_lpo_sbs_14_img_2?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1&refRID=Y72SQWFMMMQ20202G646 Hi Jessiealan, Thanks for caring. SL.

I wish I had the time to read and see all the stuff people recommend, I guess there are only so many hours in a day though!

Yes, I've heard all about them and other iffy species. The False Widow is in invading species, not a native. It arrived around a century ago on the south coast via trading ships. Hi Fretslider, my daughter had a look at the spider when she came to visit me and told me that she found two in the kitchen sink in my unit, how about that?

Hi Kronks, I have bought 2 books from a bookshop in town, that were recommended but haven't had the time to read them yet, hopefully I will, before too long if I can remember where I put them. LOL
