OK - 'Easter Snow'. There's a few renditions on Youtube and none the song I have written down. So does anybody know of another?

"Snow on Easter Sunday - Jesus Christ in reverse..." (The Fall)
I know I always go on about them, but I have always thought that The Fall works as folk music. A lot of their early songs are stories, ghost stories, stories about crime, all sorts.
IMPRESSION OF J. TEMPERANCE
Hate wide for dog breeder in the town of purport A never seen dog breeder This is the tale of his replica.
Name was J. Temperance Only two did not hate him Because peasants fear local indifference Pet shop and the vet, Cameron.
One night vet is called out from his overpaid leisure To Temperance household, delivered ran out and phoned his wife in terror.
The next bit is hard to relate. (There are no read-outs for this part of the track.) The new born thing hard to describe Like a rat that's been trapped inside A warehouse base, near a city tide Brown sockets, purple eyes And fed with rubbish from disposal barges brown and covered
No changeling, as the birth was witnessed. Only one person could do this: "Yes" said Cameron "and the thing was in the impression of J. Temperance."
His hideous replica. Scrutinise the little monster Disappeared through the door His hideous replica

Aubrey, I don't know whether or not story-songs qualify as folk. They might .. folk music has different categories and can't all be lumped together. If one is a purist, nothing but authentic folk music of particular cultures will fit. I'm more casual and do like the U.S. folk music of the 50s and 60s - much of it comedy. Not long ago, I insulted an Australian forum member by daring to suggest Tie Me Kangaroo Down was folk. He insisted it was a novelty tune. If you believe something is folk .. feel free to post it here. My favorite story-song is Chris deBurgh's Spanish Train.

I think the Fall's use of images and concepts is quite folkinsh - like the way (in one song) where he starts the chorus, then instead of finishing, says, "Fill the rest in yourself," which is very like the folk trick of ending a song, "If you want any more, you can sing it yourself."
But I do see that calling them folk is a bit of a stretch.
I used to be in a folk group that played punky versions of folk songs (2-3 years before The Levellers and The Folk Devils). We played mainly miners' songs - "Blackleg Miner," and one about meeting the devil in a mine, and also Lincolnshire songs collected by Percy Grainger - "Brigg Fair;" "T'od Yow wi' one horn;" "Seventeen come Sunday," etc (we could justify this because two of us had worked in a mine, and also lived in Lincolnshire. We also played songs off Lal and Mike Waterson's "Bright Phoebus" LP, including this one:
(There are no recordings of us: but we were good - let down by not having a decent singer, but good anyway. I played drums, and sang (badly).)

I apologize for the visual on this one. I wanted the studio version because it is well produced and the lyrics are important. There weren't many choices. Dar Williams wrote this song as catharsis and closure for a bout of depression. She put it on one of her albums and the response amazed her. Many people who had found themselves in that lonely place, sometime in their lives, knew it rang true and contacted her to thank her for saying it so well. "... and it felt like a winter machine you go through and then, catch your breath and winter starts again, and everyone else is spring bound ... "

Richard Shindell and Dar Williams Lyrics below
The Ballad of Mary Magdalene written by Richard Shindell
My name is Mary Magdalene I come from Palestine Please excuse these rags I'm in I've fallen on hard times But long ago I had my work When I was in my prime But I gave it up And all for love It was his career or mine
Jesus loved me This I know Why on earth did I ever let him go He was always faithful He was always kind But he walked off with this heart of mine
And I remember nights we spent Whispering our creed Our rituals, our sacrament The stars our canopy And there beneath an olive tree We'd offer up our plea God's creation, innocent His arms surrounding me
Jesus loved me, this I know Why on earth did he ever have to go He was always faithful He was always kind But he walked off with this heart of mine
A love like this comes but once This I do believe And I'll not see his like again As I live and breathe And I'm sorry if I might offend But I will never see How the tenderness I shared with him Became a heresy
Jesus loved me, this I know Why on earth did I ever let him go He was always faithful He was always kind But he walked off with this heart of mine
He was always faithful He was always kind But he walked off with this heart of mine ---

They are Becky and Rachel Unthank (can't believe the surname is genuine) and this is their cover version of a Beatles song.
They are a British folk group and have a TV series on folk dancing coming up shortly!
