LOL Chris. We used to have a neighbor whose house was on a little hill that overlooked the neighborhood. He put a hanged man on a branch of one of his trees, turned a spotlight on him and set a tape player to emit horrible moans every few minutes. The older kids loved it, the little kids were terrified. This was during the heyday of Freddy Kruger and the hack and slash movies, though, so there were no complaints. I guess the parents thought the kids needed to learn to feel comfortable with the ambiance of Halloween. Do you decorate the deck?

Adorable, Sugi. I have a couple more threads to go up but am totally tired and off to bed. They can wait until tomorrow. The big show business gossip today is that Mia Farrow's son Ronan, long considered Woody Allen's child, is thought to actually have Frank Sinatra as his father. He does look like Sinatra, but who knows? www.cbsnews.com/8301-207_162-57605762/mia-farrow-son-ronan-is-possibly-frank-sinatras/g'nite zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

My first thought was, "oh, that's too bad" ... but actually, I know what you mean. The neighborhood I lived in before moving here had a lot of young families and the high excitement among the kids was what made Halloween. Here, we have fewer trick or treaters and they really don't want the candy as much as they want to show off their costumes. That's fun, too but it takes things to a different level.

Here my neighborhood is one of the oldest in the city, it was the first on designed by intent for both automobiles and horses with a city trolley going right past the front turn in. To day the house are older and about half were designed by a student of Frank LLoyde Wright. Halloween we have kids brought in here by car from other areas because we (the neighborhood association) patrols the neighborhood and it is considered safe. A typical Halloween night we'll have in excess of 300 kids come to the door. Many have been here before and always want to see Cooper (our Great Dane). We use to make the front porch up like a cave with a witch stirring a pot with bats and spider webs and such.
The little kids are the fun ones as are their young parents. Here almost all kids are walked by their parents.

Makes me want to get out the ghosts and spiderwebs and set up some REAL decorations. So far, I just have the scarecrow sitting on the front steps with pumpkins. Do you sit outside or answer the door?

Glad the trip went well. Mouse, you're very fortunate to have close friends for a get-together like that. The only time we seem to be able to do itt here is in conjunction with ballgames or other events on campus where several of us are aluimni. It isn't a matter of finding time ... it comes down to making time.

Beth, we answer the door which gives the kids a chance to see cooper my 170 pound dog coming to the door to see the kids who are coming to see him.
Each year it is fun to see the changing costumes. By and large it is kids and families enjoying themselves and the holiday, but every year we get those older kids who aren't in much of costumes and always have multiple candy sacks for the brother or sister ailing at home. Maybe so, maybe not, but the amount of candy they may think they are getting away with is so small as to not matter to me.

Well ... there are always a few, aren't there? Most are very very polite, though.
One year, in a different town, I left out a "courtesy bowl" because I'd never had a problem with that ... just needed to go back out and refill a couple of times but nobody had ever hogged it. That year someone not only took all the candy but took the bowl, too. lol funny now but I was darned annoyed at the time.
