The Doors come back to life in new documentary 40 years after 'L.A. Woman'
The Doors come back to life in the new documentary, "Mr. Mojo Risin': The Story Of L.A. Woman."
The DVD release coincides with the 40th anniversary edition of the legendary rockers' last album, making it an important record not just to Doors fans, but to popular music in general.
"It is the last record we recorded," keyboardist Ray Manzarek told Fox 411. "'[Riders on the Storm] is the last song we recorded." The recording session took place at The Doors workshop near the Sunset Strip in Hollywood and was the last time they saw their front man, who flew to Paris after the 1971 recording sessions and died of a reported overdose.
But the spirit of the Lizard King lives on through the music. Manzarek claims: "If you listen very closely at the end of 'Riders On The Storm' there's a whisper voice. You can hear it in there. He's going 'riders on the storm' as he's singing, its like the ghost of Jim Morrison."
Remastering the Los Angeles rockers' swan song also led to the discovery of the lost track, "She Smells So Nice," by producer Botnick, which is included in the new two-disc set. Guitarist Robby Krieger thinks the new blues song "is nothing special", but 72-year old Manzarek disagrees: "It too is special man. It's a completely unknown," he told us. "It's like weird scenes in the gold mines. A big nugget buried treasure came out of searching through the LA Woman outtakes."
The best part for Krieger "was at the end, Jim starts chanting 'Mr Mojo Risin' which ended up being in the song 'LA Woman' and it kind of shows how something like that would evolve."
Though the members may have grown tired of talking about their legacy and explaining how each project came about, they don't take anything for granted. "Thank God we are still around and we appreciate all the fans and all the people who are going to be enjoying a great CD and a great video," Manzarek explains.
Fans can also catch both Robby Krieger and Ray Manzarek featured on DJ/Producer Skrillex's new track "Breakn A Sweat."
"Ray and I went down to the studios and met this guy, his name was Sonny. [He's a] really good kid you know and he just started on the Internet and putting his stuff out and he's like the number one DJ now and he's amazing and we did this song with him and it came out pretty good," explains Krieger.
The collaboration was released on the electronic musician's EP, Bangarang and filmed for the documentary, "RE: GENERATION" expected to be released in theaters in February.
