Well, none of you would know (or probably care) but we had a bloodless and very effective coup in Federal politics yesterday. PM Kevin Rudd was suddenly opposed for the office by his Deputy Julia Gillard.
Less than 24 hours later we have the very first female PM in our country's history.
The Premier of my state of female. The PM of my country is female. The Governor General of my country is female and she, of course, represents the Queen, who is, also female.
There you go.

It always amuses me that some people seem to consider a politician's gender so important!

May Ms. Gillard become as beloved in Australia as Margaret Thatcher was in England.

It always amuses me that some people seem to consider a politician's gender so important! its not important except that women getting top polito jobs is still a novelty in the mens club.... women can do the job just as well as any man...its all about the oportunity to prove it...and too many women in politics let let women in general down think porno smith greedy redhead horrible harriet clown cooper...just four from the last gov of the uk...they were hardly shining examples of honesty..integrity ect

No reason women should be shining examples of anything. It would be absurd to imagine that just because they are female, they are going to differ greatly from the same range from integrity to corruption and liberal to conservative as the men. What they will be is more noticed because there are fewer of them and especially by the vicious circle logic (sadly more from women than from men) focussing more attention on them, echoing Dr. Johnson that "The wonder is not that it is done well but that it is done at all" Just as long as she doesn't turn out to be another ruthless old bint like Margaret Thatcher or Mary Harney.

"another ruthless old bint"
Thatcher was instinctively authoritarian. It hasn't entirely gone out of fashion.

This is a photo of PM Julia Gillard and the man she dumped, Kevin Rudd. Now from the look on her face I could come up with quite a few comments but that belongs on another thread. I have no pity for Rudd except I don't like the fact the PM of my country can be dumped by factions in his own party and replaced by someone else. Who, by the way, still has to face a general election. I know you had Thatcher so you're used to the idea of a female PM but this is a big deal here. 24 hours and there she was, being sworn in. Now that I think about it, wasn't Thatcher replaced by John Major as PM in just such a coup?

Well, OK, if you want to look at it that way, he's no prize himself. Very true, male politicians are every bit as bad. I know of one female politician who just about passes muster....
