I pretty much agree with what you said, Fret.
Sometimes there are rational sorts of reasons why you hate people or whatever.
Sometimes it's just prejudce; sometimes bad personal experiences.
I freely admit (though I try to overcome it - not very successfully I expect) that I am prejudiced against Catholicism and successive governments of Spain.
That doesn't mean I hate Catholics or Spaniards as a group. I just hate the reactionary oppressive and heretical ideology of Catholicsim and I hate the way successive Spanish governments have persecuted the Basques.
I've know survivors of the Nazi camps who've never been able to forgive the Germans. I've known others who have.
You can't generalise on questions like this.
It's a bit what Mike would probably call a "non-question!"

I don't think it's a NON question - what a weird phrase, what does it mean? - people hate, the question is why, if there isn't one simple answer that certainly doesn't invalidate the question.

It's more usual to marvel at the sheer insanity and mad ignorance of offerings across the Web that at their reasonableness, so I'm offering this one as an example of raving common sense of the kind all too rare and often likely to get its proponents lynched for pulling the rug out from under the madmen. It raises the question though, just what is it that leads to the deep hatreds that go far beyond the mere understandable prejudices of liking or disliking how people may behave or think or look. In American racism perhaps a lingering guilt plays a part, as anti-Semitism flared in the later 1940s in countries like Poland: if it hadn't been for the Jews, there would have been no secret partition and invasion leading to war. Garbage of course. Then again, social Darwinism played a strong part in justifying slavery long before real Darwinism existed, and among those most opposed to it. The land squabble between Palestinians and Israelis is of the order of war between any colonized people and its colonizers, but its extension to Jews who do not support Israel enough to go there and often object to its existence and to Muslims who have never flocked to join the Palestinians in the way Europeans did to both sides of the Spanish Civil War is a different order of prejudice altogether. So just what different beliefs might motivate the zealots? And there's the name of what must be the original religious terrorist organization! you go off the rails when you get to your lunacy about israel, since the simple FACT is that the jews have a right to be there, and the palestinians do NOT

people often assume that hate is the opposite to love, but it isn't. indifference is. hate is so complex and often disguised in many forms; phobia = fear. hatred (phobia) of women/men, foreigners, etc, it drives people in strange ways. self hatred too.

Hate was not invented by PC so you can still talk about hate in other terms - are you saying that hate does not exist at all?

That is a brillaint post, Pipsqueak. I tend to waffle but you - you've said a lot of really profound things in just a few well chosen words. Now do you see why I nominated you as Member of the Month? If we had a competition for Post of the Month I''d definitely nominate this one! What a star!

There's nothing sycophantic about praising someone who posts something excellent. I say what I mean and I mean what I say and I never kiss ANYONE'S arse and never will. Sometimes a true gem is in a little thing, a tiny grain buried deep within a rock. It's so small but yet perfect you can miss it if you don't learn how to look for precious things properly. What's so bad about praising excellence? There's nothing sycophantic about doing that.

Good God, you've done it yourself enough times, Fret. Most members here praise a post if they particularly like it. What's wrong with that?
