I like Nora Roberts books. Don't buy hardcovers but wait to get them in paperback. Do you see the way Amazon is trying to force Kindle off on their customers? I might change my book store if they keep it up.

I might change my book store if they keep it up. I've noticed that, Sparrow. Guess the demand isn't quite what they expected and they're trying to drum up interest. I won't be buying kindle unless the time comes when I have no choice. There's something about the look and feel of a good book that is part of our mythos. A plastic and metal device doesn't do it for me. Since you like Nora Roberts, I'm wondering whether you also like Sandra Brown.

Smoke Screen is the one I like best so far. She has a new one that is just out called Smash Cut. I usually wait for the paperback.

I received Pat Conroy's new one, South of Broad, for Christmas. Since I loved Prince of Tides and Beach Music, I'm definitely looking forward to reading this one.

Jen, have you started reading South of Broad yet? I got it as an ebook and got the kinder for xmas so that I'm reading it that way. It is GOOD. The main character, Leo King, is 18 yrs old. He lives in Charleston, SC with his parents who are a high school principal (mother) and science teacher (dad). It starts out in the summer before his senior year. So far, there are some funny things and some sad things. He has met a few new people that it looks like will change his life. Let me know if you are reading it and where you are. I don't want to give out spoilers, but would like to talk about it and see what you think. aja

I am in the middle of chapter 6 of South of Broad right now and am reading a non-fiction, too. I'm glad you're reading SoB and liking it. It had been awhile since I'd read a Conroy novel and for the first 2 chapters, I just hugged up to the beautiful prose. The man has a way with words. I loved the narrative of Leo's paper route. I've been to Charleston, but not enough to feel familiar with the streets and alleyways. And, Leo is a good character. It's impossible not to like him. The mom's a tough one, though. A Ulysses freak? Such a strong character that the hubby seems kind of beaten down. The new kids that Leo meats - all in the same day, amazingly - are a little alarming. I can see how they might make some huge inroads into his life. More about that later. Have you read Beach Music? I was a little surprised he started this one with a suicide, too, but I think his brother or someone else in his family did commit suicide, so it's probably a catalyst he knows well. There's no doubt it was the defining event of Leo King's life. So glad you're into this.

My favourite books are:
Feed by M.T. Anderson (its a science fiction book that takes place in the future, really well written and sends a message of how dependent we are on technology).
My Sister's Keeper by Jodi Picoult (I love books with good irony and this book has it).
Pedagogy of the Oppressed 30th edition by Paulo Freire, Donaldo Pereira Macedo (unbelievable of how true it is, my favourite chapter is two).
thats all I can think of on the top of my head, haven't done too much free time reading.

I'm not familiar with any of these, but intend to find out more. They each sound like something I'd like to read.

Favorite books: Marley and Me, by John Grogan Different Seasons, by Stephen King Small Sacrifices, by Ann Rule Nothing too intellectual, but my favorites none-the-less. I love reading but read very little fiction, although I did enjoy The Lovely Bones. My husband just read The Dummy Line (fiction about a father and daughter on a hunting trip who encounter wackos in the woods...Deliverance, anyone? ), and he raved on and on about it, so I've got that one sitting on the table ready for me to jump into next. I don't know if I'll like it as well as he did because it's fiction. We'll see. My favorite genre is any true crime book.

I highly recommend the Kabul Beauty School by Deborah Rodriguez.....it's one of the best reads I've had in awhile. I just looked it up, and surprisingly my local library has it. It's a small town, so their selection isn't always the greatest. Whenever I buy a book from Amazon, I donate to them to help their collection. I'll definitely check that one out. Thanks.
