There has been a lot of discussion about this subject reciently here... Check THIS bad-boy out.... en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tison_v._ArizonaGary Tison, kissed his wife goodby in the court house.....and had "intimate" visits by her...right in front of the other prisoners & visiting wives & children.... Somewhere, she slipped him a pistol & he killed the transporting guard...and escaped. He was caught & again, his sons....you guessed it, during a visit, slipped him another gun. He escaped with murder Randy Greenawalt & killed two families....including a todler. OK....Florence, the Arizona State Prison was a "cracker box" back then..... But could it be, he, and his family was granted waaaay to much latitude?

But could it be, he, and his family was granted waaaay to much latitude? This is very sad, of course, On the other hand if the security in court had been more vigilant and she had been properly searched it would not have been possible for her to have smuggled the pistol in to him. I assume it goes without saying that I condemn the actions of both the prisoner and the wife; in her case for smuggling in a deadly weapon and in his for using it to kill. This is however a failure of security. It does not in itself impact upon the question of how prisoners should be treated, whether in transit or while they are incarcerated. That remains an issue which can sensibly be discussed and there are good and bad arguments on both sides. This tragic case is simply a security failure. It is not relevant to the question of how felons ought to be treated but is entirely a question of how adequate security meausres ought to be in cases of this kind.

The visitors need to be checked better. Just like with the cell phone incident on Texas' Death Row. There are many at another site that blame the guards, but not the visitors. It is both, really. The visitors should not bring weapons, cell phones, and other contraband for the sake of smuggling it in. The guards should check better and they should not take bribes from either the prisoner or their visitors. I highly doubt a guard will go out on his or her own time to buy a cell phone and a cell phone plan for an inmate. They don't make much and they have more important things to do.
I believe that prisoners should be fed and cared for properly. They should have recreation to help keep them busy so they will less likely cause trouble. I think that inmates should be grouped together by their sentence. Keep the lifers and LWOPers separate from those that are only serving 5 year sentences. Reason? The prisoners that are going to get out sooner should have more opportunities to get themselves together and prepare for life outside. Lifers and LWOPers won't really have that much of a chance to be free. There can still be programs for them, but not the same since it would be a waste.
