ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- The sister of a New York state prison inmate serving time for raping a 12-year-old female relative in 1996 says her brother has turned down a heart transplant. Kenneth Pike was flown from Coxsackie prison to Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester last week for a transplant revaluation. The Department of Corrections confirmed Monday that Pike was being evaluated. But later Monday, Pike's sister, Sharon Cardinal of Auburn, told media outlets that her brother had changed his mind about the transplant after news reports sparked a debate over inmates receiving organ transplants at taxpayers' expense. The procedure could have cost up to $800,000. The 55-year-old Pike is serving an 18- to 40-year sentence for rape. Another relative says he recently underwent a triple bypass and would likely die without a transplant. Why should the taxpayers have to pay for this to begin with?

Why did he turn down the operation? Does he not want to live his life in prison for however long he has got left to serve. Well he will save the tax payer's some money.

What bothers me is how many people not in prison would be able to afford to do this? There are millions without health insurance. So why do prisoners get extra medical benefits that law abiding citizens don't?

Why doesn't EVERY citizen have access to universal health care as a right in the United States? To me, that is one of the darkest stains upon successive American administrations of both parties. If the criminal health insurance companies - little better than fronts for the Mafia - did not have such a stranglehold on legislators and were not able to mount such an effective campaign of disinformation and downright lies then America would long since have joined the majority of civilised countries in having a fine health service available to all. It is NOT acceptable IMO to deny prisoners healthcare; it SHOULD be the birthright of EVERY citizen.

Absolutely. Everyone should have health care. The fact that inmates have better care is just an outrage.
