When our colliery closed they capped the two mine shafts, the old workings filled with methane. They then used that methane to make electricity that went into the National Grid, the old pit slags heaps were levelled off and there are hundreds of Solar panels, so a useless slag tip is serving a useful purpose. I did hear that the North Sea Gas fields have started to run out, don’t know if that is true or not. Just saying.

I worked for Phillips Petroleum on the Ekofisk complex, Maureen Platform Construction, Waterfood project etc. plus lot's of other projects. There is still Gas in the North Sea but it's expensive to get out, they went for the easy to get to stuff just off Cleethorpes and that is what is coming ashore at Bacton on the east coast and into the grid. Politicians should have set limits on exports to other countries because the UK sold it at giveaway prices just like the Dutch did. Sooner or later there will have to be more drilling done if the UK wants to be self sufficient but at the moment the UK imports gas through a pipeline from Belgium and one from Norway plus there may be others. It's OK when the gas price is reasonable but when the gas price shoots up then it's a problem.

"" All Russia has to do is turn off the gas" In the middle of Winter ! Joe Bidet was on TV saying that the USA is going to get rid of ALL fossil fuelled Government Vehicles and replace them with Electeric ones. I sometimes wonder if the Demcrats know Joe is not the full shilling or that they themselves are so full of blind unwavering hatred towards their fellow Americans that they would allow such a catastrophe to occur ? Imagine the Infrastructure necessary to charge up Millions of vehicles, the cables to be laid, all the roads and pavements dug up Hundreds of thousand of Miles of roadworks and that's just to lay the cables ! where will the Electricity be coming from ? what to do on a black windless night, no solar, no wind power ? you would have to burn coal or gas but you cannot just turn the electricity tap on, the power drains need regulating so does the unused power, what are you going to do with excess electricity ? What will the workers be doing while their vehicles are being charged ? they will need to be paid of course but the loss of productivity will be huge. Imagine the Polis in pursuit of Bank Robbers but their batteries go flat, doesn't bear thinking about ! I am certainly no expert but I have a fertile imagination and if I can conjure up all these downsides to electric cars then there must be more things I am not aware of. All in all electric is ,'Pie in the sky', and I would dearly like to see all these proponents of ,'green new deal', put their mortgages and Pensions behind it and then see what happens. All Russia has to do is turn off the gas"
In the middle of Winter !Yes. The dispute with Ukraine in reached a high point on 1st January 2006, when Russia cut off all gas supplies passing through Ukrainian territory. In the middle of winter. No surprise that they settled their differences by the 4rth January.

If I were to live in the UK then I would be installing a wood burning stove in my home, preferably one with a water jacket just in case. If there were likelihoods of power cuts then a 24 volt Truck battery with a 24/240 volt inverter would be useful to power the central heating pump to move the hot water around the central heating system.

We have more things for heating and cooking, gas is little used for power stations nowadays. We have solid fuel central heating, and being an ex miner we get free fuel for the rest of my life time. We burn Phurnicie, burns longer and is hotter than other solid fuels, even if there was a power cut the expansion in the hot water tank expands into the upstairs radiator. The stove down stairs emits enough heat to the rooms down stairs worm. It is not on in the Summer months though, it would be far too warm. A immersion heater warms the water in Summer, so gas would be no loss to us if it got cut off. Russia gets revenue for their Gas, cutting that off to other European countries would be like cutting their own throat. We have a box of candles for the night time if there is a power cut. Had those for heaven knows when, could be from after WW2, just saying.

""We burn Phurnicie, burns longer and is hotter than other solid fuels" Good stuff ! My Uncle used to work in ICI Chemicals in Redcar and he was allowed to buy the coke they shovelled out of the base of the cracking towers. Oil goes into the system then gets exposed to high pressure and temperature then it cracks, that is seperating into it's component parts at the molecular level, different stuff gets drawn off at different levels in the towers but at the very end all that is left is the coke which they want to get rid of so they sell it at a pittance. This coke used to burn so hot it was unbelieveable, much hotter than coke from coal Uncles heater used to glow deep cherry red it was so hot but they had a warm house, much better than using expensive Gas to heat !!
