most of them are opened to the public for at least part of the year..but not all of the house..many of them still are the homes of their owners..or theyve done a deal with the national trust where by the trust run the houses but the owners can still live in them
Chatsworth is still a private house and is open all years to the paying public..but they also have other functions through the year..one is a massive country fair held every year..it has show jumping..stalls..just about every thing you cam imagine..the Queen used to be a regular
the late Duchess was very unstuffy and was often seen in her wellies taking her hens eggs to the farm shop on the estate..and the now present Duke is equally unstuffy...i don't know if you watched the video on Chatsworth..the bald headed chap was the present Duke
this is another stately home..over in Cheshire about an hour or so away ........every Christmas it holds a Christmas market...stalls are all local goods and produce..from local meats including beef/venison/boar/pheseant etc to freshly ground flours...local made jams chutneys...clothes....gardening...cakes...hand made wools locally spun
hand made soaps and toiletriesetc etc ...the old stables have been renovated and most of the stalls are there...although some rooms in the main house are also used for stalls
one of the big barns[pics] is turned into an eating place where local wines/beers are served along with a never ending supply of ...nibbles
its a good evening and entrance is by ticket only so it never gets too crushed..weve been before but are thinking of going again this year
we usually designate a couple of drivers rather than taking individual cars so those not driving can have a drink or three ..its usually good fun and a some what rowdy journey back home
