That's funny, mouse. The big question is, did she do a good job helping you with the housework? I asked my mom about that the other day. She doesn't have that personal a relationship with her cleaning helper, who does the weekly things, while mom and dad take care of the daily chores. When I start working full time, I'll have a once a week, too. Women back then in the old days may not have realized they were having it hard, but compared with now, they were, of course. The biggest disadvantages, to me, had to be no running water, refrigeration or modern transportation with good roads. No supermarkets would be hard for me to manage, too. It takes time to rummage through a bunch of smaller stores. I'm in agreement with your once a week plan for help....it will give you family time. I remember in 1974, no children, but working six days a week and spending most of my day off cleaning, laundry and grocery shopping....hated it.

Thanks, chef. I'm glad somebody knows what I'm talking about. There's nothing lazy about making good choices about what to do with my time. There's nothing virtuous about being a slave to housework. It's nothing to do with feminists at all.

"""The big question is, did she do a good job helping you with the housework?"""i wouldn't have employed her is she hadn't done a good job.... and we didn't have a relationship as such ..we had no social contact..she just happened to live in the same village where as a friend for example has social contact with one of her gardners and none with the other or her cleaner...[the one she has contact with opted out of the ratrace and became a gardner] I don't blame you at all for looking to get some on in...in fact its very sensible..who wants to go out to work then come home to start all over again.. I hope you get a good reliable one

Maggie Smith is a great actress isn't she? I was glad the accents weren't to heavy so I could understand them lol Now I have to wait a few days for the next discs to get here...netflix faciliy is 315 miles south...don't have a clue why not Sacramento instead of San Jose. Just picked up at the library: Don't know why, but the Victorian and Edwardian eres interest me in how they lived. started the book and love it...I should have gone to college to be a historian or archeologist

I would have had a terrible life back then due to my poor eyesight. I would not like having to follow silly social rules of the upper class and to mouthy to have been subjected to being a servant and all the drama that went with that.

No, those times were a little too demanding for me. I do well to manage with all these conveniences.
I do find I have an affinity for the late 19th century (the reason I liked the Time and Again book so much) and also the 1920s and 30s. No rhyme or reason.

I did, but didn't like it. It was mostly a romance. Time and Again was a mystery with some sci fi mixed in ... much more my kind of book. I did like Christopher Reeve, though.

I wish I could visit one of these grand homes to explore every nook and cranny.....just to sit there and imagine the lives of those who owned it and those who served it.
