The following is from a recent ABC news story.....it's pretty scary!!!!! "Sampling at the Lagoon in March 2015 revealed an astounding 1.73 billion adenoviruses per liter. By this June, adenovirus readings were lower but still hair-raising at 248 million adenoviruses per liter. By comparison, in California, viral readings in the thousands per liter set off alarm bells. Despite a project aimed at preventing raw sewage from flowing into the Gloria Marina through storm drains, the waters remain just as contaminated. The first sampling there, in March 2015, showed over 26 million adenoviruses per liter. This June, over 37 million adenoviruses per liter were detected." abcnews.go.com/Sports/wireStory/expert-rio-athletes-dont-put-head-water-41037457I wonder which bunch of nimrods granted the olympics to this disgusting country? Sometimes I'm happy I never wasted time with a formal education as it seems to lead to living with one's head up one's arse.

I wouldn't condemn all of Brazil just because of instances of an outbreak of the Zika virus and substandard sanitation. Brazil is still a developing nation; it's not in the economic first tier. What you see is typical in large, fast-growing economies. The country just can't keep pace with the 'expected' progress. And now the economy is slowing, the situation will get worse.

Maybe Brazil - Brazil is still a developing nation - shouldn't have applied to host the games. The myth of regeneration was well and truly busted in London 2012. Far better to spend all those billions on making the lives of Brazilians better, no?

Or maybe use the infrastructure projects to further economic development and create much needed jobs and income for Brazilians.

From what I have read, the Canadian athletes accommodations were so disgusting, Canada sent a team of labourers down to get the places decent for humans to inhabit.

When the 2016 games were awarded to Brazil, didn't anyone go have a look around and realize what they were getting into? I'm with mouse. They should build a permanent stadium in Greece and have the games there.

Yes, a velodrome is a wonderful asset as is any swimming pool or athletics track. Definitely what the economic doctor ordered, eh. They should never have considered hosting the games. One can only wonder at the size of the backhanders that went into the bid. www.nationaldebtclocks.org/debtclock/brazil$ 706,027,041,262 at 12:56pm 04/08/2016 $ 706,027,147,153 at 12:57 $ 706,027,207,984 at 12:58 That's a lot of debt rising by the second. Brazil’s Exploding Debt-to-GDP One only has to look at Greece....

oh yippee.....so if the water doesn't get you...... "Rio de Janeiro, which is preparing to host a surge of visitors to the Olympic Games, is “one of the deadliest cities on earth” because of excessive police violence, Amnesty International has claimed. In a scathing report released just weeks ahead of the opening ceremonies, the human rights group accuses the Brazilian authorities of unleashing a protracted law enforcement crackdown in Rio de Janeiro that has killed more than one hundred mostly black and young residents this year alone. “When Rio was awarded the 2016 Olympic Games in 2009, the authorities promised to improve security for all,” the Brazil Director for Amnesty International, Atila Roque, remarked on Tuesday. “Instead, we have seen 2,500 people killed by police since then in the city and very little justice.” According to the report, called Violence has no place in these games! Risk of human rights violations at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games, homicides from police operations rose 40 per cent in 2014 and an additional 11 per cent in 2015, with 645 people killed by police in Rio de Janeiro alone. It said that one in five killings in the city were committed by police. The ongoing civil rights disaster, it contends, reflects a failure by the authorities to learn from similar mistakes that were made during the soccer World Cup in Brazil in 2014, which saw dozens injured and hundreds arbitrarily detained during police operations in the various host cities." www.independent.co.uk/news/world/americas/rio-de-janeiro-host-city-of-the-olympics-branded-one-of-the-deadliest-cities-on-earth-a7058346.html

Sadly, our rowing and sailing teams - among the best in the world - will have to deal with this appalling failure.
Rio has had years to prepare for the games which they should never have been awarded in the first place.
It is totally disgraceful that they are putting the health and even lives of athletes at risk.
