A gold medal, fame or fortune couldn't entice me to lower my health standards and enter this disgusting water...are athletes that desperate?
Germaphobes may want to stop reading right now.
Despite years of cleanup attempts, health experts say the waters off Rio are so disgusting, Olympic marathon swimmers, sailors and windsurfers will "literally be swimming in human crap."
New York Times reports that viruses that cause diarrhea are in the waters, as well as a "superbacteria that can be fatal to people with weakened immune systems."
As a result, scientists have advised Olympians interacting with the bay to keep their mouths closed to avoid ingesting the water.
Scientists say that feces from a nearby hospital and municipal sewage plant pours into the water untreated. And if that doesn't make your lunch rise in your throat, don't forget that dead bodies — animal and human — are found floating in the bay with upsetting regularity.
"It's disgusting," Nigel Cochrane, a coach for the Spanish women's sailing team, told the Times. "We're very concerned."
Last year, an AP investigation discovered the levels of disease-causing viruses were, in some places, 1.7 million times higher than what are considered dangerous in Southern California beaches. During a surfing competition held in Rio last year, organizers say that a quarter of the participants suffered from nausea, diarrhea or vomiting after entering the water.
A German Paralympic sailor also said a teammate had a "severe skin infection" after contact with the water in training. This, of course, is a ongoing human health crisis for the hundreds of thousands of Brazilians who have long lived with Rio's terrible sanitation standards. A public health expert told the AP that Rio's sewage system is "comparable with London or Paris in the 14th or 15th century."

Ugh.. not to mention the Zika filled mosquitoes. You couldn't pay me to go there. Surely a lot of people feel that way. The Russian team members who lost their elgibility might be the lucky ones after all.

Let's not forget those that have to live there day after day. Surely the IOC could have financially contributed to a project to improve the city sanitation. Leaving a positive impression on the city instead of milking the city dry for its own ends.

There's only so much the authorities can do with the funds they have. My image of Rio is a city of the mega-rich and the mega-poor. I haven't checked but I think I could guess fairly accurately where most money is spent. Every Olympics I read about leaving a legacy after the games. it appears to me that in most cases massive debt is the only legacy.

I see what you're saying, but Rio is a mecca for tourists and vacationers. Looks like they could set a tax for upleep and use it for that purpose alone. The information coming out now is bound to cut their tourist trade once the Olympics are history.

Look on the bright side; as you commented, at least you'll be able to watch the less-corrupt games this year; not like four years ago.

Lawdy Shades...I very much doubt these games will be any less corrupt..infact they will probably be more corrupt.. BUT its not our country who are hosting and turning blind eyes to unsavoury practise what other countries do is their affair..what our country does is very much our/my affair...I expect and demand better[my expectation are sorely tested at times] at least my MP[and others] will not be held to account for low standards this time[poor man he/they were on the receiving end of a multiude of complaints last time

The following is from a recent ABC news story.....it's pretty scary!!!!! "Sampling at the Lagoon in March 2015 revealed an astounding 1.73 billion adenoviruses per liter. By this June, adenovirus readings were lower but still hair-raising at 248 million adenoviruses per liter. By comparison, in California, viral readings in the thousands per liter set off alarm bells. Despite a project aimed at preventing raw sewage from flowing into the Gloria Marina through storm drains, the waters remain just as contaminated. The first sampling there, in March 2015, showed over 26 million adenoviruses per liter. This June, over 37 million adenoviruses per liter were detected." abcnews.go.com/Sports/wireStory/expert-rio-athletes-dont-put-head-water-41037457
