Happy Wednesday.
High of 106 deg. F again today.....yippee.....but storms off and on...so hopefully will bring the temps down......just usually with this heat the storms are kind of nasty so we end up with high winds and hail too.......so never quite sure what to wish for.....
A couple of years ago a large 18 wheeler hit an overpass here and caused substantial damage. It took a few million to repair and has been open just two months. Well someone hit again this last weekend. They had even raised it......so I have no idea what the problem is.....just way too many idiots out there. So many oilfield rigs and different equipment and careless operators that don't put it all down properly and just don't care I guess. Don't think this did "as much" damage but still going to cause traffic issues that had "just" started getting back to normal on a very heavily travelled interstate........ugh!!
Hope everyone has a wonderful day......stay cool....and be safe out there!!!

Yow! That's terrible!!! I'll bet there's chaos in the state dept. that looks after the roads and bridges!
I'd probably hand in my resignation!

With the oilfield boom that we recently went thru we had way too many inexperienced drivers behind the wheel of large commercial vehicles. To take the classes to get your CDL license (commercial) costs more than the ticket if you get caught driving without it.......so many companies just hire anyone with hands and a feet and put them behind the wheel. We've had a tremendous amount of fatal accidents mainly due to inexperience and overworked commercial drivers. It's really horrible. Now that the boom has finally ended it has eased up.....but a lot of unemployed people now and the crime rate has gone up.......a nasty cycle in the oilfield region. Hopefully they will move on soon and things will get back to how they were before the boom.

At that time (a few years ago), I remember reading that the big transport trucks would be driving cross country from south of the border, up through Texas, and there was concern about the drivers not knowing enough about the importance of speed limits, etc., here. Was that a real worry, or just hyped for media items? Whatever, hope all gets back to normal and, especially hope, the overpass is repaired so it's safe and solid.

Happy Thursday.
Pretty severe storms thru here last night. 70 mph winds. Caused a lot of damage. Nothing damage at our house but we lost power for several hours. I will try and upload the video I took. The wind was really whipping around but there was this really eerie whistling noise in the background......it reminded you of all those tornado movies you watch. Wasn't really sure what was coming!!! Not much rain with the storm......which probably helped all the people working to get power back!!!
High temps again today and possible storms too.
Have a lovely day and stay safe out there!!

Well starting pay during the boom was (at a minimum) $20 an hour. We had people flooding in from everywhere! Caused a huge housing shortage and then all the apartments started raising their rent to sky high rates and kicking out people that had been wonderful renters for years. The horrible thing about this.....teachers and other people that didn't have oilfield jobs....their pay did not go up.....so they suddenly could not afford their rent to double or triple over night. But there were so many people desperate for places to live they would pay it. We had hotels that were being built that were completely rented out before they were finished building. The average hotel rate was $80 or so before.....it was suddenly $200 for even the really low end places. I seriously believe there should be laws to stop this type of stuff. Restaurants were often half closed because they didn't have enough people to work because they left to work in the oilfield. At one time McDonald's was paying $15 an hour and actually had a bus that would pick up their workers and promised 3 meals a day. The worse problem.....extremely inexperienced people were working in the oilfield. This is not an easy job with easy equipment. Deaths were happening left and right. The boom is great for some people....there is a lot of money to be made.....but there are a lot repercussions that no one talks about.

Will things go back to normal now?

Good luck with surviving the windy weather, Sadie. I dislike heavy wind a lot. We don't have a lot of that but when we do it takes shingles off the rooftops and branches out ofthe trees. It also downs utility lines which can get hazardous quickly. Some of ours are underground, but a lot are not. Seary!

Work crews still working all over town repairing the damage from the winds last night........must be frustrating because with the high temps we will probably have another nasty storm tonight.....and they will just have to do it all over again!!
Beth - Things have gotten somewhat back to normal....rent and hotel prices are dropping....right now it is hard to find a job because we still have too many people left over.....they are trying to leave....but what usually happens is while the boom is going people spend $ like crazy and rarely put any away.....so a lot of repossessions and foreclosures right now.....higher crime.....soon....that should get cleared up and the last of the people will move on to the next booming work area.
