President Barack Obama said Monday he was moving to ban solitary confinement for juveniles and low-level offenders in federal prisons. Writing in The Washington Post, Obama said the practice diminished the possibility that prisoners could be rehabilitated. "The United States is a nation of second chances, but the experience of solitary confinement too often undercuts that second chance," Obama wrote in his op-ed, adding the decision came after a review by the Justice Department. www.cnn.com/2016/01/25/politics/obama-bans-juvenile-solitary-confinement/index.html

Not sure about this but it seems like, if a "juvenile" was acting out and hostile or violent, a day or two of solitary confinement wouldn't hurt anything. It would remove them from the general populatiojn so they could get it together.

It is torture and should be illegal, there are only 40 in solitary in the UK, about 20,000 in the USA apparently.
I think it is banned as a disciplinary measure, the 40 are probably there as they are too dangerous otherwise.

It depends on the prisoner and how long the solitary confinement lasts. In "nursing homes", a lot of the residents/patients hang out in the commons areas. There will be disagreements that sometimes become conflicts. The rule for the nurses and aides is to break up confrontations by sending the ones who are upset to their rooms for several hours or overnight. It gives them a chance to calm down. So, solitary confinement in prison, if for just a short term, might be the best solution to avoid violence.

The nursing homes should know better too, there is lot of abuse that goes on there due to lazy incompetent and cruel staff.

I doubt I would last that long. What Annie is talking about has nothing to do with torture or mistreatment but with giving potentially disruptive people a chance to collect themselves. I would never want to live in that kind of institutionalized environment but do not think they practice torture. They are well regulated. I hope our governments are always big enough to assure that kind of regulation laws.
