No holiday here in canaďa this weekend It's rather early this year. Always the last Monday in May but since we celebrate the weekend before that Monday, it feels like it's falling a week early. Not sure abut other parts of the country but here it's always been flowers to the cemeteries on Sunday and Monday has parades and ceremonies for soldiers lost in wars. An important holiday. this is one of those years in which the last monday comes practically in the middle of the month instead of the end. when you're thinking about the first of the month, it definitely screws things up. THAT is what memorial day is for. it is remembering those who are gone, ie memorial. the bar b ques and stuff is fine, IF you remember the reason that you aren't at work that day. too many fools don't

your memorial day is like our rememberence Sunday...ours is in November...the 11-11 of every year though we don't do barbies etc...but gather at the war memorials in cities towns and villages across the UK..where people gather on the 11th each year...I was very proud when my son was on active service that on numerous occasions he led the silence and the wreath laying...if memebers of the forces are in the country in novemeber officers commanding are very happy to give leave for this annual event...so its full military dress and medals to the fore and the lads do us proud IT WAS SAID THAT IN WW1 not a family in the land had avoided the loss of at least one member of that family cetral to every village and an alternate is some times a plague in chapels is a war memorial on which are carved the names of the dead ...local names of local lads...all carved in stone...some times two or three of the same surnames....and then the process was followed after ww2..many of the same names and families our war memorial is bang in the centre of the village at the cross roads...our womens group are fund raising to get monies together to help pay for a better lighting system...and until a couple of months ago we were fighting the county highways to prevent the moving of the memorial from the middle of the road to the side of the road....we won the argument...

brighter this morning now bank holiday has passed.. we have had only 8DAYS so far this year of garden days and sunshine making it fit to sit out side...and its already nearly June...I gather other parts of the country have been better blessed with sun than us...but 8dys only is grim... nothing on the agenda.. this is Grandmothers father...the photo is on glass...the reason why its so scratched is that as a child I used to play with it and a couple of others...by sitting in a dark room and shinning a torch through the image

There's a distinction between Veterans Day and Memorial Day. Correct me if I'm wrong but i *think* Veterans day is especially for the soldiers and other service men, while Memorial Day includes all family members and friends no longer living as well. That's why the family get-togethers are popular .. to have a chance to remember them in happy ways.

That's why the family get-togethers are popular .. to have a chance to remember them in happy ways. Memorial Day is a federal holiday in the United States for remembering the people who died while serving in the country's armed forces. The holiday, which is observed every year on the last Monday of May, originated as Decoration Day after the American Civil War in 1868, when the Grand Army of the Republic, an organization of Union veterans — established it as a time for the nation to decorate the graves of the war dead with flowers. By the 20th century, competing Union and Confederate holiday traditions, celebrated on different days, had merged, and Memorial Day eventually extended to honor all Americans who died while in the military service. It typically marks the start of the summer vacation season, while Labor Day marks its end. Many people visit cemeteries and memorials, particularly to honor those who have died in military service. Many volunteers place an American flag on each grave in national cemeteries. Annual Decoration Days for particular cemeteries are held on a Sunday in late spring or early summer in some rural areas of the American South, notably in the mountain areas. In cases involving a family graveyard where remote ancestors as well as those who were deceased more recently are buried, this may take on the character of an extended family reunion to which some people travel hundreds of miles. People gather on the designated day and put flowers on graves and renew contacts with relatives and others. There often is a religious service and a picnic-like "dinner on the ground," the traditional term for a potluck meal in which people used to spread the dishes out on sheets or tablecloths on the grass. It is believed that this practice began before the American Civil War and thus may reflect the real origin of the "memorial day" idea. Memorial Day is not to be confused with Veterans Day; Memorial Day is a day of remembering the men and women who died while serving, while Veterans Day celebrates the service of all U.S. military veterans. *********************************** Veterans Day is an official United States federal holiday that is observed annually on November 11, honoring people who have served in the U.S. Armed Forces, also known as veterans. It coincides with other holidays including Armistice Day and Remembrance Day, which are celebrated in other parts of the world and also mark the anniversary of the end of World War I (major hostilities of World War I were formally ended at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918, when the Armistice with Germany went into effect). The United States also originally observed Armistice Day; it then evolved into the current Veterans Day holiday in 1954. Veterans Day is not to be confused with Memorial Day; Veterans Day celebrates the service of all U.S. military veterans, while Memorial Day is a day of remembering the men and women who gave their lives and those who perished while in service.

We had a good weekend at the beach except my husband got a couple of sand hornet stings on his lower leg that messed up his Saturday for an hour or so. Our friends had a big clam bake on the sand that was the first we'd ever been to. Already planning to go again next year. Got home to find it's turned off sunner already. Perfect!

Thanks for filling in the history, Men an tol. Nevertheless, people in this part of the country celebrate with parades and cookouts and all this for the dead in families as well as those in the service. The speeches and ceremonies at parks and monuments are for those killed in service to the U.S., however. Here, it is the most important national holiday except for the 4th of July. I hope you and yours all had a good weekend.
