the nearby cottages are also quite ancient..but still lived in..modernised on the inside with heating/water etc..but there are strict rules on HOW these places are modernised inside...and how modernisation is onlyu allowable on the outside to a certain point..which does not destroy the history/visual image

after a good nights sleep woke up refreshed and ready to go this is just outside the hotels front door the bridge out of the village..its easy to see that roads and bridges were not designed for modern traffic and they are difficult to navigate with coaches and large vans/4x4 etc ..this pic is of the harbour very small as are many along the coast..designed for small fishing boats

just a small corner of the hotel showing the view from the other direction and off we go to see the isle of Arran...which is known as Scotland in miniature we went north around the island to get to BRODICK which is the island capital the weather improving all the time the road sides were awash with colour..masses of bluebells..and bright yellow gorse

views where ever one looked...and very narrow roads too[but fun] and very hilly little roads...took all these from inside the coach...in which we had the two front seats and thus an unimpeded view very windy roads..our driver did a super job considering the size and lowness of the coach...its all right until one meets another of similar size..then its back up and try to find a spot wide enough to allow one to pass the other....and even on coming car drivers look rather overwhelmed

Great pictures, mouse. Some are good enough to be paintings.
Thanks.

Mouse, these are truly beautiful. it must have been a very nice several days travelling through that beautiful countryside. I am curious about why they have left the roads so narrow. our roads evoloved from tracks wide enough for sheep/ man or a horse and cart ...the land on either side of a road is usually in private ownership and it becomes very expensive to aquire the land either side..so many of our roads are just as wide now as they were centuries ago....very narrow roads do have passing places dotted along them...but many would be impossible to widen without demolishing homes or due to deep drops on one side etc..its the same with many of our rurul bridges..many are centuries old but still expected to cope with modern lorries etc and volumes of traffic we seem to object in general to road widening schemes..except for motorways and even them there are objections plus I don't think we are as in love with cars/roads as some other countries/peoples..see them more as a necessary evil its the same with airports and runways..an outcry every time a new one is suggested...truth is we are a conjested island with limits on our space and widening would mean ruining some one elses habitat/view/property/ problems like this when it comes to widening especially along the coastal routes...and appears to be tackled only in towns/cities etc
