If people can't afford to buy they can still afford to rent privately. Council housing isn't done on a renewable basis like private lets are. It's given to people for life and they can pass it on to their family and so on and they can live there rent free for ever if they're on benefits. That's just wrong. We're not living in Victorian times; no one lives in slums any more. Apart from anything else private landlords are spending a lot of money on improving their places because of the value of their assets. And if someone is a pensioner on 150 a week then a) why haven't they worked hard and saved to put money by for their old age; b) yes, they can afford 400 a month on 150 a week. I've known people - in work - earning less than that who've managed to pay HIGHER rents than that. Why do pensioners think they're entitled just because they're old? And it is simple logic that if something is not reported then - well, it's not reported. If it hasn't been reported then you have to ask why these supposedly honourable would-be whistleblowers haven't spoken out publicly. It's also a fact of life that MOST immigrants work; MOST do NOT claim benefits; MOST pay their taxes. It's also a fact of life that most immigrants are being paid the SAME money as indigenous people so all this nonsense about them undercutting British workers is just scary propaganda put out by the far right. The secret SLAVES in our curry houses: Lured to our shores with promises of riches - then double-crossed by bosses who trap them in a twilight of poverty and fear To millions of migrants, Britain is a land of plenty - but, once here, many are brutally maltreated by their own countrymen. On Saturday, we told how gangmasters savagely exploited Eastern Europeans. Today, we reveal the shocking treatment of some workers in curry restaurants... Early evening in Banglatown, East London, and the 50 or so curry houses which line Brick Lane are beginning to fill. The narrow street throbs with vitality and colour, but we are sitting in a basement storeroom a few feet below the action, among enormous sacks of rice and spices and barrels of cooking oil. In the middle of the room a man has begun to weep into his hands. ‘What kind of life is this?’ he asks. ‘I move around from house to house because I am afraid of the authorities. When someone knocks on the front door, I hide in the wardrobe or under the bed, if I can’t escape out through the back. I am always looking over my shoulder. ‘If I am sick, I only go to the chemist, because the doctor would ask for my identity and address. Often, I only get food from the charity of others. ‘In the three years since I came to London, I have never seen Buckingham Palace or Big Ben. Only around Brick Lane. ‘It feels like I don’t exist.’ Officially he doesn’t. If people can't afford to buy they can still afford to rent privately...... oh my word..how very unrealistic in towns and villages people cannot afford to live in areas they grew up in because of unaffordable and unrealistic greedy rents Council housing isn't done on a renewable basis like private lets are. It's given to people for life and they can pass it on to their family and so on and they can live there rent free for ever if they're on benefits...rule changes coming in....but i absolutelt agree NO one SHOULD live rent free That's just wrong. We're not living in Victorian times; no one lives in slums any more. Apart from anything else private landlords are spending a lot of money on improving their places because of the value of their assets....funnily enough some landlords do not do so....... And if someone is a pensioner on 150 a week then a) why haven't they worked hard and saved to put money by for their old age; b) yes, they can afford 400 a month on 150 a week....that comment isn't worthy of an answer...but when it comes to savings...mmm very little return on savings for the last few years..hopefully the interest rates will rise[which in turn will create more problems] I've known people - in work - earning less than that who've managed to pay HIGHER rents than that.....and at what personal cost ![???](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/huh.png) ..we all know people who can live on 6pence if they HAVE to Why do pensioners think they're entitled just because they're old?.....do pensioners think that??? the ones i know certainly do not think of entitlements...others however may not be so lucky And it is simple logic that if something is not reported then - well, it's not reported.....sheeesh almighty talk about knitting fog If it hasn't been reported then you have to ask why these supposedly honourable would-be whistleblowers haven't spoken out publicly.....because they haven't for what ever reason It's also a fact of life that MOST immigrants work; MOST do NOT claim benefits; MOST pay their taxes.....mmmm and your proof is It's also a fact of life that most immigrants are being paid the SAME money as indigenous people so all this nonsense about them undercutting British workers is just scary propaganda put out by the far right.......ah right scary propaganda put out by the far right......milliband was speaking about this earlier this morning..nothing to do with undercutting and employment of both immigrants and mirgrants go tell that to the farmers..and the field pickers...go tell it to hotel workers...bar staff ..go tell it to the students who used to work the holidays...tell it to those who used to do cleaning...and so on and so forth...

Well, facts are facts. You obviously prefer to believe propaganda, lies and opinion rather than facts.
But as you know perfectly well I'm not speaking as one of the 'let them all in' brigade but as a supporter of strict curbs on immigration to as close to zero as possible.
But arguing for immigration control should be done on the basis of facts rather than paranoia.
And the facts don't support the idea that most immigrants are workshy welfare tourists, tax-dodgers or slaves.

And the facts don't support the idea that most immigrants are workshy welfare tourists, tax-dodgers or slaves. 20 yes 20 million pounds says your wrong Taxpayers spend £20million on interpreters to help foreigners claim benefits - with Polish, Slovak and Czech in most demand The Department for Work and Pensions revealed spending since 2010 Most spent on people from Poland, Slovakia and the Czech Republic Fears of rising bill after restrictions lifted on Romania and Bulgari The taxpayer has spent £20million in four years on translators for foreigners on benefits, it emerged today. The Department for Work and Pensions said most money was spent on interpreters for people from Poland, Slovakia and the Czech Republic. But there are fears that the bill will rise after restrictions on migrants from Romania and Bulgaria were lifted at the start of this month. Costs: The Department for Work and Pensions revealed how the bill for interpreters has topped £20million in four years David Cameron ordered new curbs on access to benefits for people arriving in the UK ahead of the ending of EU work restrictions for Romanians and Bulgarians. Laws were rushed through to stop immigrants claiming benefits for the first three months of arriving in Britain. The Department for Work and Pensions revealed details of the cost of interpreter services in response to a freedom of information request. In 2010 the bill came to £6,751,551, falling to £4,768,619 in 2011 and £4,118,816 in 2012. But it is on the up again, hitting £4,164,624 from January to November, latest figures show. It means that in the last four years the total cost is £19,803,610. There are around 645,000 Poles living in the UK, 60,000 Slovakians and around 40,000 people from the Czech Republic. Prime Minister David Cameron ordered new curbs on access to benefits for migrants ahead of work restrictions on Romanians and Bulgarians being lifted A spokesman for the DWP said: ‘Although we do not have the information for the top six countries that interpreter services were used for, the top three have consistently been Polish, Slovak and Czech.’ Almost one in 10 people claiming the dole is not British, according to figures released last year. It includes 35,000 from the EU, 35,000 from Africa, 33,000 from Asia and the Middle East and 6,500 from the Americas. Poland tops the league table with 14,610 JSA claimants, followed by Pakistan 7,660, Somalia 7,120 and Portugal 5,860. It also included 4,130 Iraqis, 3,620 Nigerians, 3,290 Jamaicans and 3,120 from France Private firm The Big Word won a contract to provide a telephone interpreting service for two years from May 2011. This has since been extended until 10th May 2014, the DWP said. Another company, Prestige Network, offers face-to-face interpreting services. A two-year contract from August 2011 has now been extended until 31st January 2015. A source at the department said today: ‘It’s a lot of money, most of it being spent on Polish interpreters. ‘You can imagine there is some concern that the bill will rise significantly more in the coming years as the number of Romanians and Bulgarians coming to live in the UK increases.’ A DWP spokesman said: 'We have a legal obligation to provide interpreters for people who would otherwise have difficulty accessing our services. 'This includes claimants who are deaf, hard of hearing, speech-impaired or do not speak English. We are careful to choose the most cost efficient means to provide these interpretation services. Apparently no-one comes here to claim benefits, only to work in the white economy and faithfully pay taxes here. ![](http://forums.randi.org/images/smilies/whistling.gif)

The FACTS are that the MAJORITY of immigrants work and pay taxes.
The fact that a MINORITY of them don't doesn't alter the FACT that most of them DO.
But of course to those who believe that somehow simply BEING an immigrant is some kind of crime no amount of reason or facts will have any impact.

Immigration is worth controlling for its own sake. An immigrant is an immigrant, whether he's a mendicant, hygiene-challenged gypsy or a billionaire. A nation dissolves in direct proportion to the porousness of its borders.
You guys were nuts to join the European Union. Americans would burn down the Capitol building and White House if the federal government ever did something that stupid.
I guess you're finally figuring out that the economy isn't really that important after all.

When we joined it was a free trade area and nothing else. We were given a vote on whether to stay in or not and I'm certain that, even back then, they [the politicians] knew exactly what the plan going forward was.

In fact, de Gaulle vehemently opposed the UKs joining the EEC. He invented it as a little club by which France would control Europe. If only he'd lived long enough to see his idea come to fruition - with Germany calling the shots. Ooh - the irony...

And I'm sure the Native Americans bitterly regret allowing European immigrants ever to enter!
