A magnificent song of obsession...
Like the beat, beat, beat of the tom tom
When the jungle shadows fall
Like the tick, tick, tock of the stately clock
as it stands against the wall.
Like the drip, drip, drip of the raindrops
when a jungle shower is through.
So a voice within me keeps repeating you, you, you.
Night And Day
You are the one
Only you beneath the moon
and under the sun
Whether near to me or far
It's no matter darling
where you are, I think of you.
Night And Day.
Night And Day
why is it so ? That this longing for you
follows wherever I go
In the roaring traffic's boom
In the silence of my lonely room
I think of you
Night And Day
Day and night
under the hide of me
There's an oh, such a hungry
yearning burning inside of me
And it's torment won't be through
Till you let me spend my life
making love to you
Day and night
Night And Day.

I do not know a great deal about Cole Porter except that his songs were usually light little ditties that were in some musicals when MGM made movies like that. I only know a few.
Just One of Those Things
It was just one of those things Just one of thoese crazy fling One of those bells that now and then rings Just one of those things It was just one of those nights Just one of those fabulous flights A trip to the moon on gossamer wings Just one of those things If we had thought a bit Of the end of it when we started painting the town We'ed had been aware that our love affair Was too hot not too cool down So goodbye dear and amen Heres hoping we meet now and then It was great fun, but it was just one of thoes things

Predominantly a musical theatre composer, and a clever wordsmith. Also prolific - see en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_songs_written_by_Cole_PorterOdd rhymes I liked: "If she says that your actions are heinous/Kick her right in the Coriolanus" ( Brush Up Your Shakespeare)and "You're Inferno's Dante/You're the nose on the great Durante" ( You're the Tops). All very cheeky! A great exponent of the 'laundry list' song, as in Let's Do It

My father had a Cole Porter book of piano music. I was perplexed to see "In the Still of the Night" wasn't the same song as the one in my sister's collection of 45s. Most of his lyrics are clever. Most of the list I've never heard of but here and there are some I like ... "C'est Magnifique", "You're the Top", etc..

A very different version here - but one of which I'm rather fond: Sung by The Comedian Harmonists

Yes, the timing is markedly different. Jazz with a very German sound.
Here's an instrumental version by the Biréli Lagrène Ensemble, Django -like.

Versatile little number, isn't it? But the original feeling of obsessive passion has been lost... The wonderful thing about a good piece with a strong leitmotif is that you can do it in so many different ways, and always get a result
