Today I started reading a fascinating book. It covers a huge range of subjects and I hope members here will also find it interesting.
It's called 'Critical Mass' and it's by Philip Ball.
In essence, it examines the role of chance and necessity in the way things work out in the world. It discusses many philosophical positions from Hobbes onwards, many scientific experiments and many cultural and political ideas.

Mike, is this a moderately light read the layman can enjoy or is it a scholarly text? Makes a great deal of difference in whether I'd choose to read it.

It's variable, to be honest. Most of it is pretty much accessible but a few chapters get a bit heavy and one or two I find somewhat boring.
On the other hand it is full of surprises and does repay the effort of ploughing through the less accessible sections!
