Tinners Way, the final foal of Secretariat and a two-time winner of the Pacific Classic Stakes (gr. 1) was retired to Old Friends on Monday, Sept. 13, 2010.
Born on May 25, 1990, Tinners Way (profile) was, according to a BloodHorse.com article, "Secretariat's (profile) second-best colt behind champion Risen Star."
In his career, he raced 27 times, winning 17 of them and earning $1,846,546. He also had six seconds and four third place finishes.
As a 3-year old, the chestnut son of Secretariat-Devon Diva, by The Minstrel, traveled to England where he won the City of York Stakes and the Milcards Temple Fortune Stakes. He also finished third in the Singer & Friedlander Greenham Stakes in England (ENG-gr. 3) and the Prix De La Foret in France (FR-gr. 1).
At 4, he returned to the United States and was trained by Bobby Frankel. Then with Eddie Delahoussaye riding, he won the 1 1/4 mile '94 Pacific Classic Stakes (gr. 1) in 1:59 2/5ths. The time was, as described in the Old Friends press release, "reminiscent of his sire's Kentucky Derby run at the same blistering fractions."
In addition, during his 4-year old campaign, he won the Golden Gate Fields Breeders' Cup Handicap, and finished second in the Mervyn Leroy Handicap (gr. 1), the Bel Air Handicap (gr. 2) and the Arcadia Handicap (gr. 3). He also finished third in the San Bernardino Handicap (gr. 2).
When he was 5, Tinners Way ran to a repeat victory in the Pacific Classic with Frankel training and Delahoussaye riding once again. He also finished second in the Hollywood Gold Cup Handicap (gr. 1) and the Goodwood Handicap (gr. 2) and third in the Californian Stakes (gr. 1)
In his final year of racing as a 6-year old, Tinner came back to win the Californian Stakes.
In 1996, Tinners Way entered his stud career at Vinery, located near Midway, Ky. He later stood at Harris Farms, which is located near Coalinga, Calif. Finally, he stood at Key Ranch (website) in Salado, Texas where, thanks to the help of Phil Leckinger, he was retired to Old Friends when his stud career was over.
Tinner came to Old Friends just a few weeks after another son of Secretariat, Academy Award, passed away at the farm.
