I don't agree, Lynne. It's partly the robotic inflexibility and inhumanity of the law that makes people despise it.
Most people DO understand that you CAN'T look on the likes of Marianne Bachmeier in the same light as Richard Ramirez and they HAVE to be treated differently otherwise you DON'T get justice.
Of course Mike has far more extreme opinions than me - even so, I've probably shocked you more than once, Lynne!
Believe me, I'm quite moderate and even conservative compared with my husband.

If and when we allow some citizens to avenge murder (for example) then we give permission to all citizens to do the same. *If* that's what we want, then by all means change the laws. But, then, why bother with laws that make it wrong to do so? So, MVS Johnny kills his sister's murderer days before a verdict. All good, the rotten phukkah deserved it. The MVS of Johnny's victim don't like that they didn't get justice so they take the law into their hands. And, on and on. Where does it stop?

Well, if we had a SANE society to begin with it would help.
I'm going offline for a while but I'll answer you later, Lynne.
I really feel that far too many people are sent to prison for minor offences and that many offences shouldn't be crimes at all.
I also hate the way that some people get slaps on the wrist and others get disproportionately punished.
To me, justice has to be about PROPORTIONATE punishment for the crime.
That's why I support the death penalty for murder - and ALSO why I DON'T regard all intentional killings AS murder.

I really feel that far too many people are sent to prison for minor offences and that many offences shouldn't be crimes at all. I don't have the statistics off hand right now (as I don't have my book with me) but in Canada, first time male offenders are less likely to get sent to prison (for minor offenses), however female first time offenders are always most likely to be sent to prison. In Canada it would be a provincial prison (sentence less then 2yrs) but still quite alarming as they are overrepresented in the prison population, which in turn leads to overcrowding, which in turn leads to high levels of inmate stress, which in turn leads to impatient guards, which in turn leads to a failure of the justice system to meet it's end goal. Agreed. Isn't it ironic that our justice system does the complete opposite. Those who should be punished proportionately for a heinous crime get a "slap on the wrist" in most cases when the punishment could be more severe, while those who say violate California's 3 strike laws for stealing bread to feed their family get sent to prison for life.
