I can't tell you how many times I've heard a song and wondered who that great voice belonged to, and it turned out to be Vanessa Williams. This song did that to me recently. Although I'd never heard of it, it was released in 1991.
From Wikipedia: "Just For Tonight" is the third single from Vanessa Williams' second studio album, The Comfort Zone (1991). The song was slightly remixed for the single and reached No. 2 on the US Adult Contemporary Charts[1]. The single's B-side is Whatever Happens, a song from her 1988 debut album The Right Stuff, while the CD single contains the previously unreleased song Love Like This, which was later also to be included on the compilation album Love Songs (2004)."
Not crazy about but the video, but I really like the song.

I like Gladys too. Also: Kate Bush, Joni Mitchell, Tracy Chapman and Kirsty MacColl. Went to see Joan Armatrading a year or so ago in Brighton but was a bit disappointed. She was great on stage (but didn't sing my favourite "Down to Zero") but after the concert we joined the queue to see her and get her to sign our CD. When I told how how much I enjoyed the concert, she never even replied, just sort of shrugged.

Alf...Alison Moyet.
A great 80's European hit from Alison Moyet. Unfortunately her music never really caught on in the States.

She is so friendly and warm, and a truly great singer. Apart from Aretha (her voice is knackered now) iv'e seen the top Soul singers that i want to now. I also saw the lady (iv'e posted above) Alison Moyet, back in 1987... a real powerful voice. I saw Whitney back in 1988, a great voice but no personality, and very unfriendly on stage. Sad that Joan had that attitude, kind of spoils the night really eh.

The Empress Of Soul....Gladys. I've always liked Gladys Knight. I was surprised to learn that she was a Mormon... used to have a gambling problem. I don't know if those two are related.

Back when the Carpenters were popular, I was in love with Karen. In a sense, I still am. Whenever I hear her voice I feel sad because she's not here anymore.
