One of my favorite songs. Bobby Caldwell co-wrote and released it in 1978, and the English pop duo, Go West covered it in 1992. Forget the videos (Caldwell's is bad) which one do you think sounds better?

Sounds better?
Are we talking production values or performance/arrangement? Assuming you're coming from an engineering angle.....
For my money, if you take away Caldwell's voice you're left with a pseudo Becker/Fagan sound. Go West were a typical 80s sound - I hate drum machines - but it is, without doubt a slicker production. Perhaps money was an issue there.
But this number's been covered quite a bit, this offering from Phyllis Hyman is so Level 42, and I'm referring mainly to the rythmn section here.
I personally prefer the 'Dan' sound even though the recording could do with a remix and master.

I never heard tha Hyman version, didn't much care for it. I like Level 42, and I'm a big Steely Dan fan. Pretty fond of Go West, too. Weren't those old videos bad?
