I went to the Brighton Dome to see Ben L'Oncle Soul on Sunday 11th March I was very pleasantly surprised, he and his group were very very good. Soul, funk, a touch of Reggae, and some Motown. They did tracks in French and English. His backing band were good, two male backing singers who sang well and danced well. Good choreography with Ben involved and plenty of energy. The backing band consisted of a drummer, bass, lead, keyboards, sax/trumpeter, sax player, who were very soulful and very funky. I don't suppose anyone is off to see him, so i can say that Ben stated his influences were Marvin, Ray, Sam and Dave, Sam Cooke etc. So near the end of his set he did renditions of Ray's "What i'd say".... a Temptations classic... and one of the backing singers took over the Prince vocals for a really good copy. Full of energy performance which lasted about 2 hours. If you have not a scooby who i am on about....here he is. A bit of Marley. A Happy Song A Chillis cover

Really good, Soulman. New to me, too.
Anybody who counts Sam Cook as an influence has excellent taste and, here, there's major talent, too.
Thanks for sharing with us.

Iv'e just booked to see Squeeze. They play Brighton Dome in November. Great live apparently. For those not familiar with this late 70's/80's band. Here are a couple of tracks. Just a bit of info. The vocals on a few of their tracks was sung by Paul Carrack, i've seen him and he is one of the best white soul singers. He was also lead vocal on Mike and The Mechanics "Living Years and Looking Back Over My Shoulder". So, the lead vocal of Squeeze is Glen Tilbrook, with backing vocals from Chris Difford (he lives in the Brighton area) and Chris turned up at Paul Carrack's concert, so i'm hoping that Paul does a slot with Squeeze. As many know the original keyboard player of Squeeze was Jools Holland. He now has his tv show and big band. Anyway Paul Carrack with Squeeze is best known on "Tempted"... but here is another track "Loving You Tonight" Oh and for those across the pond... Squeeze Hourglass on Letterman Oh... and with a certain David Samborn on Sax..with Jools on the keyboards..

Four days to go before the concert. I brought 2 tickets and i am taking an old friend of mine. His wife died in May, i went to the funeral. A couple of months after the funeral he had a heart attack, brought on by the stress. Anyway, he's been down for a while now. He's really looking forward to this gig. This track is not very well known, it was the B side to their big hit Tempted. Jools Holland was not on the piano, it was Paul Carrack This should get the feet tapping.

I hope you have a very nice time Soulman. When a band puts on a good show it makes all the difference. The concerts are even more important than recordings to me.
