Are those apartments in the background in the 3rd picture? I just don't think I could deal with living in something like that!!!! Need space and greenery!!! Indeed those are and nor could I. However some local people evidently like those, because the apartments at the top fetch the highest price. Like Frasier in Seattle (or is it Chicago) some people like the views from the top. I have been in one, albeit far more modest at only six stories high. The views are impressive but still I prefer to live in my two story home with a garden. Regards. Prashna

Well, Sadie You can see my original pic of the tower blocks, up close and personal here. The structure on the right is the multi-storey car park to serve the lucky owners of these apartments. You could buy an apartment on the 34th floor for a mere US $ 125,00 Dollars. |Cheap at the price and likely to appreciate @ 5% pa compound at least, could even be 10% pa compound: i251.photobucket.com/albums/gg293/MM1942/Kolkata-2011266.jpgHere is a reduced size pic to give others a feel for the scale of the development. You can see now why Western Investors, including myself, are investing their hard-earned money in the Pacific Rim, can't you? Regards. Prashna

That is just being with too many people........would feel like a sardine in a can!!!! Not quite, Sadie. Sardines, in a way, are somewhat more fortunate in that they are no longer capable of feeling when in a can. Of course, you could argue that being caught by humans in itself is an infringement of Sardinian rights. Being canned simply adds insult to injury! Prashna

OK, now for something completely different: The front of Peter Cat on Park Street where we went for dinner on Christmas Eve And the lights on Park St Including Father Christmas as well There were some westerners under a little influence rendering their versions of Jingle Bell etc. I took some videos but no stills. ++++++++++++++++++++++++ Our next dinner away was at the ITC Sonar. The photos of the Peshawri Restaurant contain us and thus are unsuitable for a public MB. This was the view from the lounge. and a close-up Regards. Prashna

Prashna I live in a second story apartment and cannot look over the edge as it is to far from the ground so not sure I could live up there although the views would be tremendous

Time for a very different theme. Kolkata is not city with too many open spaces. The largest open space is at the centre and called Maidan. Its edges feature the Oberoi Grand, where we had a memorable dinner, the Museum and the St. Paul's Cathedral, the Victoria Memorial and Fort William and of course Eden Gardens, the second largest cricket stadium in the world and located in the heart of the MaidanBut today, I would like to take you to Rabindra Sarobar (previously known as Dhakuria Lake) is an artificial lake in south Kolkata . We were fortunate enough to have found our apartment within five minutes walk of this lake. So I took the opportunity to talk a walk around. This is what I saw: The blue notice on the bridge advises visitors NOT to cross the bridge and enter the island when namaj is held at the Masjid on the island, five times a day. Also prohibited on the island any inappropriate behaviour or the taking of photographs (an injunction that I ignored). The Masjid (Mosque) can be seen in the next photo. Apparently Muslims had the mosque there when excavations started for the Lake. The British even then avoided any disruptions to the Mosque. Of course, Temples and Monasteries, Churches and Synagogues in Muslim countries are afforded identical courtesies by the Muslim powers that be. Afganistan was probably an exception. Prashna

In reply 73 I provided an overall view of the entrance hall of the South City Mall. The escalators are a major feature there as such are still a novelty in Kolkata. However the Christmas scene tableau is better shown in the following close-ups: ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ I mentioned the Victoria Memorial earlier; this is how it looked when we visited: And some more pictures of that cute suspension bridge to reach the tiny island on the Lake: And the Lake once again. You can see the rowers on the Lake, can't you. There was a rowing contest going on while we watched. More on that on next post. Prashna
