I'd have to say that I'm disappointed to hear you take such a one-dimensional and, to be honest, somewhat naive attitude.
Sadie's husband for instance is a police officer and I don't believe that she would put up with being married to a corrupt cop.
Another policeman I used to know was extremely helpful to some friends of ours who were lost in London late at night.
Saying that they are all corrupt is on the same level of lack of thought as suggesting that all blacks are criminals or all Asians are suicide bombers.
I am surprised and disappointed to read such a shallow viewpoint from a person of your own intelligence.

Naive? You really think so? I suppose you do, but I know whereof I speak.
Sadie's husband is not in the Met is he?
Do you remember how the Police would urge people to tell them if they were away on holiday so they could 'keep an eye on the place'. 9 times out of 10 the boys in blue told their friends in the criminal fraternity when it was safe to turn them over and they did.
Never seen the police arrive at a shop break-in and proceed to fill the boot up with, er, evidence?
Race has naff all to do with it, still I guess the temptation to drag a false syllogism into it is too great.

Truth has EVERYTHING to do with it.
Your claim would and COULD be true ONLY if every single officer in the Met, without exception, behaved in a corrupt or otherwise unlawful fashion.
Since that is NOT the case you are just airing your prejudices.
I don't have a problem with that; I have plenty of my own.
I do however admit when I am simply expressing an opinion or a prejudice and when I am stating a fact or a logical necessity!

Truth is a mighty big elephant.
Everybody has a price and a weakness.
Experience is an excellent teacher.

Hmmmm..........there are good and bad in every profession. No exceptions. So there will be good and bad cops.
I would want my husband to defend himself......personally I don't think this officer was trained very well and there were other ways to handle this situation.......but it is a little hard to tell from the limited we see. You want to get the situation under control without starting a riot.
My husband has been spit on, hit, had someone try and run him over with a car, shot at and had death threats,.......we've had our home phone number, address and the names of our kids found at drugs dealers homes when he was with the drug task force........I've answered the phone and been told to pass along the message to be sure to have him wear his vest because the people they were going after had hand grenades..........writing that you think officers are corrupt really isn't going to phase me........I just have to chuckle because the same people that do nothing but complain about them sure do scream for them to show up and save their butts when they are in trouble........

I don't know about other police forces than the one I know here (the Met) and it is of that force that I speak.

Truth is a mighty big elephant. Everybody has a price and a weakness. Experience is an excellent teacher. And so is logic. For your statement to be TRUE it would be necessary for EVERY police officer WITHOUT EXCEPTION to display the faults of which you accuse them. Since that is NOT the case your statement is simply FALSE. Why do you not simply have the honesty to ADMIT that your statement was simply an OPINION and NOT a FACT and that it represented your PREJUDICES rather than an indisputable truth? Your refusal to do so can ONLY be the result of one or two possible 'reasons.' One is that you suffer from the inability to admit that you are wrong even when it is glaringly obvious to everyone else. The other is that you are consciously lying in the interests of your own propagandist agenda. There are NO other reasons for maintaining the truth of a FALSE statement when it is both logically AND factually clearly UNTRUE.

As it happens two friends of Lin's (believe it or not) joined the Met when they left school. Neither of them behaved in the manner you assert that they ALL do and one of them was not only extremely helpful to some friends of hers but actively assisted them at a difficult time.
If you seriously believe that all officers in the Met are corrupt I suggest you ought to get out more, Fret.
Try mixing in the real world a little more!
As for Sadie's husband, although I do not know him I know from my acquaintance with his wife that he must be a good man.
I refer you to some words of Malatesta the Italian anarchist about the police. I will paraphrase them from memory because I do not have his book to hand at the moment.
Malatesta said, in essence, that the problem with the police was NOT that they were inherently corrupt, brutal or any of the other accusations laid against them.
The problem was that they were compelled to operate in the service of government and of the established order and the privileged classes.
He pointed out that in an anarchist society there would STILL be a need for a CITIZENS' police force, justice system, prison system and even perhaps the death penalty.
Malatesta is perhaps the least one-dimensional anarchist philosopher of all time. His work is well overdue for a revival!

While you claim to mix it with the Chief Constable, I have mixed it with the ones out on the street. Perhaps you need to get out more. Sadie's husband is not in the Met, he's not even British. You are a one for red herrings, aren't you. What do you know of.... Guardia Finanza Polizia Carabinieri Vigili Urbani ? Probably not enough. Philosophy seems to be your only card. And we all know what they say about philosophers.
