For all those in the drought area -
The long, hot, dry period of this prolonged drought has kicked off the expected rabies epidemic. It will soon be evident in all warm-blooded animal life (next will be skunks and raccoons), but right now we're having trouble with rabid bats.
We've had several instances this week of school children being bitten when they tried to pick up sick bats lying on the ground. We had another case today. Poor kid - he's in for some real pain.
I've never been bat-bit - but I HAVE had the rabies shots - and they are very painful. The needle is stuck into the tissue of the wound itself - the shots in the belly are only the overflow they can't shoot into the wound.
Tell your kids that if they see a bat on the ground, or threshing about - LEAVE IT ALONE. Even if it's dead.
