Thought it would be fun to start a new thread on hymns.
Here's a few good ones:

this is a coincidence. just before i got here i was time hunting down Emma Kirkby singing 'feather on the breath of god' having heard Cerys Matthews discussing Hildegard of Bingen on great lives on radio4 this week. Hildegard of Bingen was a truly remarkable woman. an influential and powerful 12 century nun - still time to listen to the programme if you want. www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b014q00ci also love 'Jerusalem' but listen to this rendition by John Otway (headbanger fame, rip).

I've always liked "Were You There". Church choirs and choral groups here use that one a lot.
As a side note (almost off top but not quite) ... I've never been able to see the crucifixion the same way since reading The Master and Margarita. Prose that offers up stunning visuals.

Ladylinda, thanks for this thread. Handel's 'Messiah' - wonderful of course. Kiri Te Kanawa - perfect voice. 'Be Thou My Vision' has been a longtime favourite of mine. A beautiful simple tune, but mysterious too, for the eerie way it tries to drag one back into the mists of time from whence it cameth. In this rendition the particular voice spoils it for me though - the voice and tune is not compatible for me. I like the 'Brothers James' Air' setting of 'The Lord's My Shepherd'. I think it is the unusual irregularity of the melody that attracts. For decades I had wondered about Brother James, I knew he must have been a real person and rather pictured a benevolent old friar hidden away in an isolated religious establishment somewhere. I made some desultory though unsuccessful attempts to discover who, if real, Brother James was, but I didn't find out it was Scot James Bain, known to his associates as Brother James, until about a decade ago. The appeal of obscure history (and genealogy) encourages the detective in all (well, some) of us, doesn't it?
