Is anyone else having problems with the Spell Checker?
This is the second day I've had trouble. Most of the time it doesn't want to give me access ... will work properly every 4 or 5 times. Bad news for me because I do tend to typo.

I frequently have problems with it, but it's because it links out to a URL that it can't find at the time.
The net's a busy place.

Especially on weekends! Thanks Lewis, I'm glad it isn't just me.

My problem isn't so much Spell Checker, but staying logged in.
I get "welcome guest" about every third time I hit enter.
I think it's because I'm limited to dial-up modem, and my ISP keeps dropping my connection.
They insist the problem isn't with them, but everyone I know who uses their service has the same complaint.

Dial-up can be a pain. All servers glitch now and then. Cable is probably the best. We use DSL because cable here misrepresents the max ul and dl space. Not that we use that much but because ya have to figure, if they misrepresent that .. what else is there behind even the fine print. DSL via our baby Bell is adequate.

My little street runs off a state highway, and along that highways right-of-way runs TV Cable (Time Warner).
They refuse to extend service to those living on my street.

It's probably all about how much they can make vs the cost to them. Most cable companies are hard to deal with. We have Insight and are not their favorite customers because we've turned down their telephone and computer services.
Years ago, we lived where no servers at all had hook-up. Fortunately, a small 2 year college was nearby and they allowed us to hook in with them for someting like 10$ a month. Bet they don't allow that anymore.

And stay down - they might be sending an entire byte. It'll be over, in an hour or two . . .
Dial up was well and good, "back when". But programs are no longer written to be memory-efficient, and the packets of data sent down the pipe are so large that it swamps dial-up.
People ASSUME that everybody has the latest and greatest - but that just ain't so.

The first computer I wrote programs far, after training, had sixteen (count 'em, 16) K of memory. It was a workhorse ...
Then I moved over to the RACE horse - the IBM 70/80. It had a whopping big 86 K - although about half of that was taken up by the operating system.
Programs, and data throughput, were written for EFFICIENCY. The more data and instructions you had, the more could go wrong and the harder the problem was to find.
No more . . . .
Oh, my - how many sleepless nights when I worked the clock around - debugging the work of someone long dead, that had failed in execution.

Jim, it was dial-up, we called the local number they gave us and for 10$ a month, we had service. That was in 1994 and we carried that for about a year until we moved. I'm pretty sure that's correct but I'll ask when someone who knows comes this way.

Bad news for me because I do tend to typo. I have never used that facility here because there has been no need. Therefore my response is necessarily limited. With that caveat, here it is: It is adequate but not smart. I made one spelling mistake here; using the sequence "np" in place of "no". The spell checker displayed an overlong list including "No", which was ungrammatical and therefore unwarranted. Other than that it detected no spelling errors. Prashna
