Something I learned today.
When it comes to computer connect problems ...
NEVER assume the problem is in your computer.
ALWAYS assume the problem is with your server.

Something I learned today. When it comes to computer connect problems ... NEVER assume the problem is in your computer. ALWAYS assume the problem is with your server. I assume you are referring to connecting with the ISP. My experience coincides with yours. The few occasions when I have not been able to use the Internet or email at all were always because either the server or the connection was down. Of course bandwidth limitations are common place and result in slow connection rather than stopped connections. Prashna

I had loss of connection problems last night, or rather early this morning. That is a little bit alarming since I have only had the cable service since Thursday because of just that kind of unexplained service loss with the wireless - which was working. It went down while I was using it and though it did find an address on reboot (Linux tells you these things) iy wasn't getting through to anything. I take a guess that addresses usually come with a renewal time - usually something like 1400 seconds - so maybe it wasn't able to renew

I have never been connected to the internet in UK, so I cannot compare but I have a module sitting on my desk called a n9uf box. This plugs into a dedicated phone line and connects to my computer. When I am connected a green light appears, if (very infrequently) the light turns to orange I know that I am not connected. A five minute shut-down normally puts things right, if not, a call to my supplier, I am told, will have it fixed within minutes. Luckily, I have never got that far. More likely is an occasional sulk by the LEA plugs which connect my module to the TV via the house wiring system. Same treatment, unplug for five minutes and all is well.

What you have done is the standard advice I was given by ntl (now virgin media, UK's cable company) several years ago. Switch off the modem, wait 20-40 s, then switch it on again. That causes the modem to re-establish connection and usually clears out the problem. I do not need to do this, because I do not leave anything on standby, if I can help it, and that includes the modem. So every morning the modem is re-energised as a matter of course; and several times during the day as well. Regards. Prashna
