I've been trying to figure out how you choose which boards to hide and which to be open for guests to view. I can't work out the logic. This isn't a criticism, nor even a technical query I guess!, but I am so curious.... ... why are some closed and others open? And how did you choose which ones would be which?

I used to limit access to boards which were likely to attract the haters. For example, an open board about great holidays in Dubai would be overwhelmed by posts about 'murderous islamic terrorists'. A pure and simple anti-troll measure.

That's part of it. If a Topic has ongoing subject matter that's a little more controversial or touchy than the norm, I'd rather keep it in the JT community. We've even had a guest copy and paste posts to other boards in the past, just to try to kick off arguments and flames. One would think nobody would have that little to think about or do, but it happens. OTOH, there are other, more practical reasons. The music topics and threads are usually opened up for guests to enjoy on weekends, but not through the week. The reasons are 2 fold and simple: 1) We'd like those who enjoy the site to register instead of lurking around the edges. and 2) In order to keep the dreaded google/PB ads at bay, we have to pay X amount each month and that is standard as long as our page hits don't go over 50,000. In fact, they do, routinely go over 50,000, but if we limit the days the music threads are open to guests, we can keep it under 100,000 page hits. So, as much as we like to share our nice music areas, it makes sense to be good to ourselves at the same time by keeping it manageable. Otherwise ... we rotate some of the topics, a little time open a little closed. Some, never, others always. Good mix.

Thank you, trubble. We've worked hard this past year, but it's been a labor of love. We needed to create a good base because we plan to be here a long time.

Very wise, I'm sure, Soul ;D
Should probably mention we're not totally consistent about open and closed threads. It isn't yet the weekend, but the two main music topics have been open a couple of days. According to our ad=free numbers, we're going to have to kick in for coverage up to 100,000 this month anyway, so we may as well share.
