Brexit New Year
This coming year at last brings resolution
For those of us who strove for liberty
Three whole years, as with lies and contumely
They drove us to the brink of revolution,
Till we were saved, as our democracy
Heaved its last protest, and in dissolution
The hostile ranks fell silent in confusion,
And we at least could dream of being free.
Corbyn and his foul fiends we put to flight,
Though I’m no fan of Johnson, even so,
Better a toff who means to let us go
Than those cut from the same cloth who delight
In looking down on us as racist fools
Who never went to august public schools.
A New Year breaks, perhaps a new age dawns,
Fountains of light gambolling in the sky
For us, who braved the darkness to defy
Those who traduced us. You now stand forlorn,
Baffled that all your wiles have gone awry,
That we resisted valiantly your scorn,
And now at last we welcome in the morn,
A future not for you, but such as I.
We, the despised, rejected, dispossessed,
Hold up our heads with pride, with freedom’s crest
Safely in our invincible proletarian hands
As we prepare to liberate these lands.
Author notes
We're finally leaving the European Union on 31st January and will be over the transition period by December 2020. This is my celebration of the triumph of Brexit over all the forces of the Remain establishment who tried to stop it.
