French fishermen are threatening direct action to blockade the United Kingdom if they are stopped from accessing the country’s fisheries once it takes control of them back from the European Union. Shortly before Britain joined the European Economic Community, as the European Union then called itself, the bloc changed its rules so national fisheries became a so-called “common resource” to be shared out by Brussels — a well-timed move, considering the an outright majority of the fish in northern Europe were in British waters. Norway, which was also applying to join the bloc at the time, ultimately decided against doing so due in no small part to the devastating impact they expected the measure might have on the fishing industry — but Britain’s europhile prime minister, the late Edward ‘Ted’ Heath, decided his government must “swallow it all and swallow it whole” in order to secure accession after previous setbacks in the 1960s. The blow to the British fishing industry did indeed end up being considerable, particularly in Scotland, and was exacerbated when Spain joined the bloc in the 1990s — the the point where most of Britain’s fish is assigned to foreign countries. French fishermen, however, seem set on acting much more decisively, even lawlessly than their British counterparts to preserve the current arrangements, weighted so clearly in their favour, and to avoid a situation where they “find Belgian, Dutch and Spanish boats all crammed into French waters”. “If there is a hard [no-deal] Brexit, I can assure you that not a single kilo of seafood or fish from Britain will get into France,” vowed Olivier Leprêtre, who chairs the regional fisheries committee for the country’s north, in comments reported by The Times. “We would set up barricades. All the fishermen along the northern French coast will tell you the same thing,” he said. www.thetimes.co.uk/article/french-fishermen-threaten-to-blockade-uk-exports-after-no-deal-brexit-s2z6m5s7bwww.breitbart.com/europe/2019/08/09/brexit-french-fishermen-threaten-blockade-uk-stopped-plundering-british-fisheries/Given that the UK hasn't got a navy anymore, we could pay the French fishermen to catch illegal migrants instead of fish...

all we need to do is stop all French wines and cheeses coming in...…. if they wish to do what they have done for centuries... on their own heads be it....I don't think any one UK is willing to be dictated to and especially not by French Fishermen who0 like all the other French want it all their own way

Not for given them for what they did to King Harold in 1066, OK, they called themselves Normans then but they were still French. It must be the Anglo-Saxon blood in me, I have never cared much for the French anyway, still I enjoyed a couple of nights in Paris once, but didn't care much for the French food, too much garlic. Just saying.

when it comes to cheeses I find it amusing that we import so called chedder cheeses...and yes I too prefer British cheeses.. and what a variety we produce
I am not a wine lover either never have been .. much prefered a good larger and lime.. a well drawn guiness with a proper head or an aged scots whisky....although these days a large Bailies on ice goes down well
French food is overated imo….and some lavatorial habits leave much to be desired especially in the more rural areas
