Jessie.. as long as she is civilised she will be fine regardless of her views on the monarchy.. she is entitled to her opinion for or against.. and we will avoid the subject what ever way she swings we can only make her welcome and go from there... only one small detail is that she has moved up from Surrey so unless her roots are in the north she is a southerner.. who quite often don't quite get northers....isn't that right Fretty….. but as no one is looking for a new best friend,... it should be and we hope its all going to be fine and a wonderful change dry but damp and dreary with rain forcast you do not have to be best friends to be good neighbors. Best to you both. not forgetting the others who are heaving a sigh of reliefe and hoping for better...and future smoke free gardens in the summer

the snow we had some days ago is well gone.. though some remains on higrounds in Scotland aand Wales another cold night nearly all the leaves are off the trees as we rush headlong into winter proper... That reminds me, I have to use the leaf blower when I get home today and then every day this week and most on the ground will be gone. My grandparents cultivated a dozen or so Pin Oaks on their land years ago. As you probably know, Pin Oaks regrow their foliage as soon as they lose it in the fall.. The younger ones don't seem to lose it at all. I'd like to set out a few if I ever have some extra time. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Quercus_palustris
