Italy is yet more proof that Brussels only believes in democracy when it produces the 'correct' result, writes NORMAN LAMONT By Norman Lamont For The Daily Mail Published: 22:54, 29 May 2018 | Updated: 00:29, 30 May 2018 Given the disdain for democracy that is regularly displayed by Europe's political class, the deepening political crisis in Italy is all too predictable. Yet again, we are seeing the pro-Brussels establishment showing that it will not tolerate any challenge to its project of political integration. In the mindset of the governing elite, the European orthodoxy must prevail, even when it means riding roughshod over the wishes of voters. That domineering mentality lies at the heart of the drama in Italy, the Eurozone's third- largest economy, where a coalition with widespread public support has effectively been barred from office because of Eurosceptic views. Apology corner.... Germany's European Union Budget Commissioner Gunther Oettinger said: “the markets will teach the Italians to vote for the right thing” Pretty much what one would expect of the EU. But then... In a rapid backpedal on remarks that revealed the EU establishment’s disdain for Italy attempting to form a populist government, Commissioner Oettinger released a statement Tuesday evening:
I fully respect the will of voters being left, right or centre and in every country. By referring to the actual market developments in Italy, I did not mean to be disrespectful and I apologise for this. Italy as a founding member played and plays an important role in European integration and I hope it will continue on this path.
The comments -“the markets will teach the Italians to vote for the right thing” – were initially reported by Deutsche Welle then deleted and reissued in friendlier phrasing.
The reworded quote was hardly less condescending to the sense of democracy, with Mr. Oettinger saying he hoped that “the markets and a ‘darkened’ outlook will teach Italy’s voters not to vote for populist parties in the next elections.”
Italy’s populist Five Star Movement has demanded that the European Union “defend democracy” www.breitbart.com/london/2018/05/30/eu-budget-chief-apologises-disrespectful-comments-italy/www.breitbart.com/london/2018/05/29/defend-democracy-outrage-german-eu-boss-markets-teach-italians/The EU still doesn't get it.

they will never get it Fret... they are facists... do as I say or else... they have made them selves abundentl6y clear over the yrs and particularily rencently they cannot understand how their personal visions are questioned and even thwardted by what they term populist... I mean who is going to vote for the unpopular with the population for far too long no one questioned and then came Farrage so they labelled him far right because he called them to account for them selves..[which they didn't ] then came brexit and it was labelled racist and a vote by the uneducated thickos then came Greece police violence.. hunger and desperation... the blackmail and financia thuggery then rioting in Spain the arbitrary closure of banks in Cyprus rioting in Italy elections in various countries with the anti EUS gaining all the time Merkel hanging on by a thread and the recent elections in Italy with the anti EU gain gain and more gains
during all this time those anti the EU went from being thickos who did not understand the glories of the EU to being called far right... meanwhile THE uk was battered verbally by those who wanted punishment of the UK for daring to object with a free vote .. they demanded monies with threats of what would happen if the UK did not pay up and now its Italys turn but be threatened and punished .... both the UK and Italy should walk away from the hideous malformed money pit which calls its self a union...the reality is a disunited collection of unelected telling millions what they can and cannot do
