THE PYRAMIDS OF FAR NORTH QLD Sand mounds at Mapoon in far north Queensland have been found to contain Aboriginal graves believed to be thousands of years old. The mounds had previously been thought to be part of the natural landscape with some people believing they were the remnants of abandoned brush turkey nests. Archaeologists believe the graves could be 5,000 to 6,000 years old; the earliest Egyptian pyramids were built in 2630-2611 BC. Some of the graves appear to contain spears, coral, stones and flowers as well as human remains, suggesting ritualistic burial. Hundreds of such mounds have been located along a 60 kilometre stretch of coast around Mapoon but have yet to be fully investigated. Local indigenous people suggested using ground penetrating radar to investigate the mounds after seeing the technology used on the British television program Time Team. .
