As is their tradition, this morning the New York Film Critics Circle announced its annual awards live on Twitter. The first week of awards season has already seen “Get Out” and “Call Me by Your Name” top the Gotham Awards and “The Post” take top honors with the National Board of Review, and today all eyed turn to the NYFCC to see which movies and performances will get an added boost as we get closer to the bigger shows.
Greta Gerwig’s “Lady Bird” took the top prize of Best Picture, while its leading lady Saoirse Ronan snagged Best Actress. “Call Me by Your Name” breakout Timothée Chalamet picked up Best Actor, while “The Florida Project” star Willem Dafoe was awarded Best Supporting Actor. In a delightful surprise, “Girls Trip” star Tiffany Haddish earned the Best Supporting Actress prize.
Other big awards were given out to Sean Baker for his directing of “The Florida Project,” Paul Thomas Anderson for writing the screenplay for his “Phantom Thread,” and Jordan Peele for “Get Out,” named Best First Film. Elsewhere, Rachel Morrison is believed to be the first woman to win the award for Best Cinematography on “Mudbound,” and Pixar’s “Coco” won Best Animated Film.
Founded in 1935, the New York Film Critics Circle is the oldest and most prestigious in the country. The circle’s membership includes critics from daily and weekly newspapers, magazines, and the web’s most respected online publications, including IndieWire’s own Eric Kohn and David Ehrlich. The NYFCC will hold its annual Gala Awards dinner on Wednesday, January 3, 2018. This year’s ceremony will be dedicated to the memory of Richard Schickel.
