Tower Hamlets has told developers that plans for a building complex of offices and flats must include a gay bar to counteract the “alarming” rate at which gay bars are closing down. This is believed to be a landmark ruling where the sexual orientation of a building’s users has been included in the conditions for planning approval. The Grauniad noted that City Hall’s ‘culture at risk’ office will be involved in assessing license applications to ensure the new bar will be “sufficiently LGBT” and not “a gay bar in name only”. The borough’s mayor, John Biggs, said: “Tower Hamlets council is committed to celebrating our great diversity, which includes serving the needs of our LGBTQ+ community. I am delighted that as a council we are leading the way in using innovative ways to protect spaces such as the Joiners Arms site.” Over the past decade London has lost 58% of its LGBT venues as their prime locations are snapped up by developers for regeneration and clubgoers abandon nights out for the convenience of Grindr, Tinder and other hookup apps. www.theguardian.com/world/2017/aug/04/you-must-open-a-gay-venue-in-office-complex-planners-tell-developers?CMP=share_btn_fbYears ago there used to be a lot of live music venues. Now there are precious few of them left. I don't remember a council demanding a live music venue in a development. The business model has changed; even gay ways change. Not much diversity in the council's thinking.

I would have thought gay bars closing was a good thing and that possibly there were too many who jumped on the waggon and multiple bars are now no longer needed surely that gay bars are closing.. indicates that business is not booming and thus the bars are closing because of lack of customers is this not a good thing? .. I would have thought that perhaps gays no longer NEEDED special bars or type of segregation from the rest of the population .. that gays no longer need their own bars and their own areas where tourists can come and stare and patronise at the animals [sorry customers] that hen nights.. no longer boozed up to glory..wearing next to nothing but balloons invade gay bars in order to shriek the night away leaving a trail of vomit to make sure every one knew they /wus/ere
perhaps we may have actually grown up enough to realise that homosexuals and hetrosexuals can actually use the same bars and clubs and get along as people instead of odities
