Today the phony war ends. Scottish chaos The Scottish Parliament has tonight voted to demand a new Scottish independence referendum in defiance of Theresa May's warning 'now is not the time'. MSPs voted 69 to 59 in favour after Nicola Sturgeon warned she will not back down if Mrs May ignores her demand for a fresh Scottish independence vote. Immediately after MSPs voted, Scotland Secretary David Mundell insisted the UK Government's position had not changed and negotiations on a referendum would not start until after Brexit was finished.
MPs and Peers must vote for a new referendum for it to be legitimate but despite tonight's events in Edinburgh, Mrs May is not required to call a vote in London. The standoff means Miss Sturgeon will have to follow through on her warning to 'take steps' against the PM after Easter to defend the will of the Scottish Parliament. The comments appear to hint that Ms Sturgeon could stage an advisory ballot but this would be a dangerous step fraught with questions about who would pay and whether unionist parties would take part at all. www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-4356890/Sturgeon-warns-WON-T-independence-vote-demand.html#ixzz4ciKWI2vR Britain will refuse to pay the EU's £50billion divorce bill, David Davis has insisted - as Germany signalled it is ready to fight for the money in court.
Brussels is set to make the huge demand to cover the bloc's 'liabilities' after Theresa May triggers the formal Brexit process tomorrow. But the settlement is gearing up to be a major obstacle that could derail negotiations before they get properly under way. Ministers have indicated they will not agree to hand over more than a few billion pounds, and have received advice that they are under no legal obligation to pay anything. www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-4356094/EU-legal-threat-Davis-vows-UK-WON-T-pay-50bn-divorce.html#ixzz4ciL5F0V9 2 years at least of this sort of thing to come. A medically induced coma suddenly seems appealing.

A medically induced coma suddenly seems appealing. just out of interests what would Scotlands shre of this 50 billion pound debt be...and if independent how would they pay their share I suppose it depends on what parameters you choose to work it out. I suppose population count is easiest, but then there are factors like rates of EU aid by region against UK input like the Barnett formula, regional development, county council funding etc That's by no means an exhaustive list, these things are fiendishly complex. As for payback, the Scottish deficit is currently around £15bn. OIl prices will not rise much with Trump in the White House, so Sturgeon can't rely on oil or gas to make it affordable - whilst maintaining their high spend. In truth, their chance came and it went.

all very true Germany is a member ... BUT the EU is supposedly a separate entity with its own financial and government system and as the law depends on detail.. it could be argued we owe Germany nothing as all the monies we have paid in so far were paid DIRECTLY to the EU NOT Germany It's true that the EU is a way of binding in what was once a dangerous neighbour. Instead of a total victory for the Wehrmacht, it's a total victory for the mighty German economy. Different approaches, but largely the same result: 4rth Reich Germany, a cluster of client-nations and those pesky Englischer dogs.
