(One of my favorite singers. Didn't realize he was so young.) 'Freedom' singer and ex-Wham! member George Michael dies at 53Ex-Wham! member and London-born singer and songwriter George Michael has passed away. He was 53. Michael was born Georgios Kyriacos Panayitou in 1963. He was a member of the pop duo Wham! from 1981 to 1986. Wham! sold more than 25 million albums. Michael sold more than 80 million records worldwide as a solo artist. His first album, "Faith," sold more than 20 million copies. Billboard magazine named Michael the 40th most successful artist on its Hot 100 Top All Time Artists List in 2008. Michael was named the most played artist on British radio from 1984 to 2004 by the Radio Academy. "It is with great sadness that we can confirm our beloved son, brother and friend George passed away peacefully at home over the Christmas period. The family would ask that their privacy be respected at this difficult and emotional time. There will be no further comment at this stage," Michael's publicist said. Thames Valley Police said South Central Ambulance Service arrived at a property in Goring in Oxfordshire at 1:42 GMT, according to BBC. Police say no suspicious circumstances were involved. www.wpbf.com/article/freedom-singer-george-michael-d-at-53/8535920

I vaguely remember Wham and the name George Michael but never paid attention.
Sorry to hear he passed.

Wow.
Not so much a surprise, but what timing.
Wham was Michael, Andrew Ridgeley was a lead weight, hence the solo career. RIP George

The 3 best singers in rock - George Michael, Freddie Mercury and Steve Perry.
Perry is going to be inducted into the R&R Hall of Fame with Journey ... the other 2 gone.
Sad.

The amount of work he did for charity, the amount of money he gave to charity, these things he kept quiet. He could be found at drop out centres giving out soup and helping. His first hits and biggest hit he put his friend Ridgeley's name on the piece, knowing it would set him up for life financially. A nice guy, a tortured soul, who abused his body.

Isn't it a pity most celebs use charity events etc as a reboot for flagging careers. People like George Michael and David Gilmour give a lot and you never hear about it, because they care about the cause they're giving to, not reviving their fortunes.

Apparently Elton is going to sing Don't Let The Sun Go Down On Me at George's funeral. They did a duet on Elton's track in 1991.
George joined later on stage by Elton.

Thank you, Steve. I'll bet I've watched those 2 videos dozens of times over the years. Hard to top.
Whadda voice!
